Georgian College President MaryLynn West-Moynes

Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes brings extensive academic and administrative experience in postsecondary education in Ontario, having held senior positions at both the college and university level.

She has served as Vice President of External Relations at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), President of Mohawk College, and in numerous senior leadership roles at both UOIT and Durham College.

Throughout her career, MaryLynn has demonstrated an unwavering focus on serving students and meeting their needs. MaryLynn has extensive experience leading strategic planning; championing co-operative education, international and curriculum initiatives; and forging innovative college and university partnerships and pathways.

She has also been responsible for establishing community, government and industry relationships; leading student services, marketing, communications, branding and fundraising teams; and undertaking major financial management and capital expansion projects.

MaryLynn received her PhD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. Her research examined organizational culture and leadership skills. She holds an MA in adult education from Central Michigan University and a BASc from the University of Guelph.

Community-minded, she has served on numerous volunteer boards and committees throughout her career.

MaryLynn was officially installed as Georgian College’s President and CEO at a special ceremony at the Barrie Campus on Oct. 11, 2012.

Baldev Pooni, VP, Academic and University Programming

Baldev Pooni official headshotBaldev Pooni brings to Georgian more than 25 years of experience in the college sector. He’s held progressively responsible academic and senior management positions in the community college system in Canada. Along with teaching, Baldev has served as Vice President of Education and Student Services, Dean of Trades and Technology, and Chair of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology. Prior to his postsecondary career, his work experience ranged from apprentice technician to research mechanical engineer.

Baldev’s broad range of experience includes academic and strategic planning, and program review and renewal. He’s led numerous efforts that resulted in expanded academic pathways with university partners, as well as innovations in technology-enhanced learning, Aboriginal programming, international education and continuing education. Baldev has also served as a representative for colleges in British Columbia on ministry-led initiatives in such areas as education planning and trades training development.

At Georgian, Baldev is helping to advance and achieve the college’s strategic vision and mandate. He is responsible for all programming in the classroom and for providing leadership to six deans and directors and more than 1,100 faculty members across the college’s seven campuses.

Baldev leads and empowers an experienced and dedicated team of academic, administrative and support staff to champion strategic academic planning, program review, quality assurance and development. Baldev also oversees university partnerships, strategic enrolment management, and applied research to achieve excellence in teaching, learning and student success at Georgian. He provides effective stewardship of capital and operational resources, and contributes to community support and development by fostering strong partnerships and college fundraising efforts.

Baldev holds a Master of Science in Application of Computers in Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Teesside University in England.

Lisa Banks, VP Communications, Marketing and External Relations

Lisa Banks official headshotLisa has 25 years of marketing and communications experience in both the public and private sector. Prior to joining Georgian Lisa served as the Director of Communications and Marketing and then acting Vice President, External Relations at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).

Before joining UOIT in 2009, Lisa held progressively responsible marketing and communications positions at Bell Canada, culminating in the role of Senior Director, Community Affairs.

At Georgian, Lisa leads the development and execution of an integrated marketing and communications strategy that includes corporate communications, marketing, web development, student recruitment, fund development, alumni relations, conference and event services and government relations.

Lisa holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from McMaster University.

She has served on committees for Imagine Canada and the Council of Ontario Universities, and has volunteered her time as a non-profit board member.

Catherine Drea, VP, Student Engagement and University Partnerships

As Georgian College’s Vice President, Student Engagement and University Partnerships, Catherine has extensive and wide-ranging experiences in colleges and universities in the field of student engagement.

Catherine was formerly the Director, Office of Student Life, at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus. Previously, she was Associate Vice President at UOIT, Vice President at Mohawk College, and has also worked at Humber, Seneca and Durham colleges. In addition, Catherine brings provincial government experience, including time spent at Employment Ontario as Director, Service Delivery Branch and Ontario Director of Apprenticeship for the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University, a Master of Arts in Education from Central Michigan University and a Doctor of Education from the University of Toronto. Her doctoral thesis focused on the government role in student accessibility in colleges. She has authored numerous articles, is a member of the School of Graduate Studies at OISE/University of Toronto, teaches for Central Michigan University, and is a volunteer non-profit board member.

Angela Lockridge, VP, Corporate Services and Innovation

Angela Lockridge official headshotAngela Lockridge is Vice President, Corporate Services and Innovation at Georgian College. She is a seasoned executive with a wealth of experience in the private and public sectors. Beginning her career with General Motors of Canada, Angela moved into the Ontario Public Service (OPS). Prior to joining the College she served as Assistant Deputy Minister within the Family Responsibility Office, ServiceOntario and the Ontario Provincial Police. During her 20 years in the OPS she also held positions in the Ministry of Correctional Services, Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ministry of the Attorney General and Management Board Secretariat.

Angela joined the Georgian team in July 2010 and has expertise in the areas of human resource management, organizational development, diversity and accessibility, relationship building, strategic planning, change management and transformation, performance accountability, client services, and fiscal and systems management. She has led major strategic initiatives within the OPS, working with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders to create positive and effective relationships and business systems.

In her current role, Angela is responsible for Human Resources, Organizational Development, Strategic Planning, Organizational Renewal and Institutional Research, Employment Equity, Labour Relations, Information Technology, Campus Security, Physical Resources (construction, renovations, space planning, food services, janitorial services and parking), Accounting, Financial Planning, General Administration, Legal, Risk Management, Purchasing, (including Printing, Shipping / Receiving / Mail Services) and the Kempenfelt Conference Centre. She is also accountable for Organizational Planning and Development (including organizational renewal, strategic planning, institutional research and space planning), Human Resources, Employment Equity, Labour Relations, Information Technology and Campus Security.

Angela has provided strategic support and advice while ensuring that human resource plans are aligned with corporate direction including leadership development, succession planning, learning and development, formal recognition, staff engagement strategies, and measurement/accountability systems.

Community involvement is very important to Angela. She is a former member of the Gilda’s Club of Simcoe Muskoka Board of Directors and is currently a board member for the Barrie Police Service.

Angela serves as the Secretary-Treasurer to the Georgian College Board of Governors.

She holds an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and is a Certified Management Accountant.

The Georgian College Board of Governors consists of 12 members, together with the President and CEO of the College, one student, one faculty members, one support staff member and one administrative staff member.   Effective October 1, 2010, one-third of its membership will be appointed through the Public Sector Appointment process and two-thirds will be appointed directly by the Georgian College Board of Governors.

The Board of Governors is a corporation. In a legal sense, it is the College. The Board is a Schedule III Agency of the Government of Ontario and is accountable through the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities to the people of Ontario.

In general, a college Board has the power to govern the College and in law, is responsible for the College’s activities. However, the College administration, which derives its authority from the Board and is accountable to the Board, manages the day-to-day activities of the College.

Position Description – Specific Accountabilities

Vision

  • Set the College vision, strategic directions, and overall goals and outcomes within the context of the appropriate laws, government policy, and local need.
  • Establish and implement the College’s purpose and mission.
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of the College Strategic Plan, Annual Report and Business Plan.
  • Approve the College’s annual business plan and budget.

Governance

  • Establish governance structures to enable the achievement of expected institutional outcomes with clear lines of communication and internal accountability.
  • Contribute to the development of Board Policies.
  • Participate on Board Committees and/or Task Forces and at a variety of College functions (e.g. Awards Banquets, Convocations), on a volunteer basis, as requested by the Board.

Community

  • Provide a link between the College and the community, and confirm and expand the College’s identity within the community.
  • Advocate on behalf of the College in its efforts to secure resources.

CEO

  • Hire the President and CEO, delegate to the President and CEO accountability for the performance and operation of the College, and evaluate the President and CEO’s performance.

Management

  • Provide continuity for the governance and management of the College’s affairs.
  • Ensure that the College is effectively and efficiently managed.
  • Attend Board meetings.
  • Be informed on all Board matters, and be prepared to make decisions based on that information.
  • Set the rate of progress for the College to undertake to achieve its purpose and mission.
  • Ensure that appropriate corrective action is taken where expected outcomes or quality of performance is not being achieved.

Self-evaluation

  • Collectively assess the effectiveness of the Board with respect to governance and the attainment of corporate goals and outcomes on a regular basis.
  • Specify how the Board conceives, carries out, monitors and measures its own tasks.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of individual Governors at the time of their reappointment.

Submitting a nomination

Help celebrate Georgian staff members, alumni and community partners who have made an outstanding contribution to the college and who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence.

The Board of Governors accepts nominations from Governors of the college, staff and students. The deadline for submissions is the last working day in February.

Alternatively, you may drop the form off in Room H103 at the Barrie Campus.

The awards will be presented by the Board of Governors at a special ceremony in the spring and/or at an appropriate convocation or ceremony.

Recognition committee

A committee – comprised of the Board Executive, internal Governors and other senior staff – will select honourees for the above awards and make recommendations to the Georgian College Board of Governors. Recipients will be notified by the President and CEO.

Georgian College and the wider community celebrated the leadership of a new President and CEO in an official installation ceremony at the Barrie Campus Oct. 11. The ceremony marked the fifth time in Georgian’s 45-year history that the college has welcomed a new President and CEO.

Georgian College and the wider community celebrated the leadership of a new President and CEO in an official installation ceremony at the Barrie Campus Oct. 11. The ceremony marked the fifth time in Georgian’s 45-year history that the college has welcomed a new President and CEO.

After being sworn in as Georgian College’s new President and CEO, MaryLynn shared her vision for the college.

“I believe in the value of education. It is life’s greatest equalizer – regardless of where you come from, with the right education and the right attitude, you can make your mark in life,” she said. “I whole-heartedly embrace the responsibility you have given me and I am excited and eager to lead Georgian College.”

MaryLynn will begin her job by focusing on three key strategic priorities. The first is extraordinary teaching and learning through entrepreneurship education, experiential opportunities and technology-enabled delivery. The second is a focus on student access, mobility and choice, by offering expanded pathways and innovative partnerships.

Finally, recognizing that a leading institution must lead from within, Georgian will focus on productivity, innovation and sustainability by applying its values of entrepreneurship and innovation as foundational principles to transform and build on its institutional efficiency and effectiveness through a collaborative process of organizational renewal.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty sent congratulations to MaryLynn and to the Georgian community, via a video address. Noting that Georgian has seen just five presidents in its 45-year history, the Premier said “clearly, you choose well when it comes to leaders.”

He described MaryLynn as “an accomplished scholar, a strong administrator and a caring leader.”

“There is greatness in Georgian because you are already doing great work – students, faculty, administrators,” McGuinty noted. “I am confident that Dr. West-Moynes’ leadership will elicit even greater contributions.”

MaryLynn was officially sworn into office by Board of Governors Chair Gwen Strachan. In a symbolic portion of the ceremony, support staff, faculty and administrative representatives removed MaryLynn’s academic regalia, while  student government representatives from Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound placed on her shoulders the official gown of the President and CEO of Georgian College.

Guests included members of the Georgian College Board of Governors, faculty, staff, student and alumni representatives, as well as municipal, provincial and federal politicians. Also attending were Linda Franklin, President and CEO of Colleges Ontario and presidents of three of Georgian’s university partners – Dr. Tim McTiernan from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Brian Stevenson from Lakehead University, Dominic Giroux from Laurentian University, as well as Dr. Harley d’Entremont, Vice President, Nipissing University. Special guests also included past Georgian College presidents Brian Tamblyn and Bruce Hill.

Shaun McCracken, student representative on the Georgian College Board of Governors, told the audience that students already appreciate the new president’s commitment. “MaryLynn is truly focused on student success. It is at the core of everything she does – every conversation she has, every question she asks,” McCracken said. “She is committed to leveraging Georgian’s strengths, continuing to enhance our record for pathways and degrees, and ensuring that the relevant resources and services are in place so the student experience at Georgian is the best not only in the province, but in Canada.”

In a surprise announcement, MaryLynn said she has commissioned a book chronicling important moments and events contributing to Georgian’s heritage during the stewardship of past presidents Tamblyn and Hill. The book, examining the years since Georgian College’s 25th anniversary, will be written by Bob Kennedy, recently retired Vice President, Marketing and Student Services.
