Withdrawing
What will this do to my OSAP?
You will be withdrawn from OSAP, your file will be reassessed and any forthcoming funding will be cancelled. The OSAP funding is based on the number of weeks in your program of study. Your OSAP entitlement will be reassessed based on the actual number of weeks you attended classes. This may cause an overpayment on your file.
What is an Overpayment?
An Overpayment is funding you received that you are no longer entitled to.
How will an Overpayment affect me?
- If you withdraw from your fall semester and want to return to school at any post-secondary institution during the same academic year, your overpayment will be deducted from any new OSAP assessment. If you do not return to school within the same academic year, your overpayment will remain on your file, and it will not affect your next years OSAP assessment. However, if you receive a second overpayment or have had a previous overpayment (therefore, 2 years of overpayment), you will be restricted from OSAP until the most recent overpayment is paid in full.
- You will be ineligible for any loan forgiveness you may have been entitled to receive. This means you must repay all the funding you received.
- You will be placed on academic probation for OSAP purposes, which will remain on your file for the duration of your academic career.
- Your tuition and related fees refund, if you withdraw within the deadline period, will be sent to the National Student Loan Centre and applied as a payment against your student loan.
- Your loan payments will begin 6 months from the date of your withdrawal. Be sure to contact the National Student Loan Centre and/or your previous lender to arrange payments. (Refer to Repayment Information Sheet)
What are my Options?
Talk to your coordinator and/or counsellor first, before making any decisions. You may have options other than withdrawal.
Talk to him/her about possible:
- Extra help or tutoring for difficult courses
- Extensions on projects, tests, etc.
- Incomplete grades (I) – to allow further time to successfully complete your course(s)
Investigate all avenues before making a final decision keeping in mind withdrawal deadlines, academic penalties and OSAP reassessments.
