ACADEMIC STANDARDS OF VARSITY ATHLETES PRACTICE AND PROCEDURE

To establish a method of monitoring student athletes academic progress.

PURPOSE:

To ensure that individual students participating on Inter-Collegiate teams (varsity), maintain an acceptable academic standing and are encouraged to consider their education as their first priority.

SCOPE:

All Inter-Collegiate athletes of Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology.

PROCECURE

1 . Athletic Department Responsibilities:

1.1 Provide each academic division with a list of all student athletes participating on inter-collegiate teams.

1.2 This list will be provided 2 times per year, during the mid-term of each semester.

1.3 To encourage student athletes to be aware of their academic responsibilities.

1.4 To assist the student in attaining his/her goals.

2 . Academic Division Responsibilities:

2.1 To provide the Athletic Department with appropriate academic status on each student athlete’s progress 2 times per year. (See 1.1 & 1.2). (A release form is to be signed by the student when registering for the athletic program.)

2.2 To work with the Athletic Department to encourage student participation and the promotion of activities.

3 . Registrar’s Office:

3.1 At the end of semester the Athletics Department will request information on the athlete’s academic performance from the Registrar’s Office.

4. Joint Responsibilities:

4.1 If a student athlete’s grades indicate a concern or potential concern, the Dean, Chairman (Co-ordinator) of the academic division will mark the student as UNSATISFACTORY.

4.2 The Athletic Departmnent would then make an appointment with the appropriate academic administrator to discuss potential solutions, to assist the student in attaining academic credibility.

4.3 Possible actions to be taken once a student athlete’s grades are considered unsatisfactory are.

i) Place student on a probationary period to bring grades up.

ii) Provide Peer Tutoring.

iii)Provide the student with counselling to review the student’s goals. (Student may have selected the wrong program).

4.4 If a student athlete’s grades do not improve during the probationary period, he/she will be placed on team suspension until such times as he/she provides satisfactory evidence that grades have improved enough to be reinstated.

4.5 Once a student athlete has been reinstated, he/she will be placed on a probationary period, to ensure he/she strives for academic credibility.

SUMMARY: Each case will be unique, and as it is understood that the interests of the student are our prime concern, this procedure is used only as a guideline, and may be changed with the consent of all concerned.
