COLLEGE POLICY ON ADMISSIONS
POLICY:
College policy and procedures on admission reflect the guidelines established by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities Admission Policy, the directives of the College’s Board of Governors and the principles of the Ontario Human Rights Code.
PURPOSE:
To identify and establish policies and procedures for the admission of applicants to college programs as defined by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities Admission Policy.
SCOPE:
All full-time and part-time applicants seeking admission to College programs and courses.
RATIONALE:
Admission practices shall ensure that all applicants are considered fairly and equitably within the guidelines established by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities Admission Policy, the directives of the College’s Board of Governors and the principles of the Ontario Human Rights Code.
PROCEDURES:
1) QUALIFICATIONS FOR ADMISSION
The basic admission requirements to College programs are as follows:
a) an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with 30 credits at the general or advanced level, or its equivalent; or
b) the Basic Training Skills Development program (BTSD) with level 4 which represents college level academic upgrading in Communications, Mathematics and/or Sciences; or
c) mature student testing for those applicants who are 19 years of age or over and successfully complete college administered testing to indicate their preparedness to enter the program of choice; or
d) specifically identified admission requirements particular to some programs such as Futures, Transition, OBS, etc.
2) ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA EQUIVALENTS
Georgian College recognizes the following as equivalent to Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) at the grade 12 level.
Alberta – Grade 12
British Columbia – Grade 12
Manitoba – Grade 12
New Brunswick – Grade 12
Newfoundland – Grade 12
Nova Scotia – Grade 12
North West Territories – Grade 12
Prince Edward Island – Grade 12
Quebec – Leaving Certificate
Secondaire V/Secondary V
Saskatchewan – Grade 12
Yukon – Grade 12
United States – Grade 12
England, Wales, West – General Certificate of Indies, East & West – Education at the “O” level
Africa, members of the with credit in at least six Commonwealth Countries subjects which must include English and Mathematics.
Where English is not the first language, international applicants must arrange to write the “Test for English as a Foreign Language” (TOEFL) and achieve a score of 550 points with a minimum of 50 points in each test area.
3) PRIORITY OF ADMISSION
As established by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities Admission Policy, applicants will be considered in the following order of preference:
a) Permanent residents of Ontario
b) Permanent residents of Canada
c) Citizens of other countries
4) SPECIAL NEEDS APPLICANTS
Applicants with special needs are encouraged to contact the College’s Special Needs Co-ordinator in the Student Services Department to apprise themselves of program demands and what accommodations can be made to meet their individualized needs and specialized assistance and/or equipment. Once admitted to a Georgian College program, every effort will be made to accommodate applicants with special needs.
5) SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTION CRITERIA
Some programs will require special prerequisite courses, essays, questionnaires, medical forms, specialized certification, portfolios and attendance at information sessions in addition to the basic admission requirement. These requirements will be listed in the College calendar and other appropriate program information documents. It will be the responsibility of the student to have or complete such requirements during the admission process and prior to registration if the applicant is admitted conditionally.
In accordance with the Ministry’s Admission Policy and the Ontario Human Rights Code, where there are more equally qualified applicants than spaces available in an oversubscribed program, the College will use formal selection techniques as approved by the Ministry’s Admission Policy to determine the final selection of applicants. Where deemed essential, the College will employ techniques such as academic requirements, testing, information session results, questionnaires, resumes supporting previous related learning and/or work experience, portfolios, approved articulated agreements, physical health and age requirements, to determine final selection to oversubscribed programs.
6) ADMISSION PROCEDURES FOR APPLICANTS
Applicants will be required to follow admission procedures, stipulated timeframes and published deadlines for admission consideration as outlined by the College calendar, the provincial/college application form, and correspondence issued by the Office of the Registrar. All of the above are established provincial guidelines and regulations from the Provincial Committee of Registrars, Admission and Liaison Officers (CRALO) and approved by the Council of Presidents.
Letters advising applicants of the College’s admission decision for all programs will be issued within the timeframes established by the Provincial Committee of Registrars, Admission and Liaison Officers.
7) POLICY/PROCESS FOR THE REVIEW OF AN ADMISSION DECISION
In accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, Georgian College provides applicants the opportunity to have a decision for non-admission to an advertised program or course reviewed. An applicant must submit the request for review in writing within three weeks of the date the admission decision was provided to the applicant. The College will review the request and clearly define the process and reasons for its decision through the Office of the Registrar.
