More than 100 volunteers, mostly Georgian students, came together to provide logistical support for the second annual Base Borden Run held on Sunday, Oct. 23, at Canadian Forces Base Borden. A BIG THANK YOU to all volunteers who contributed to making this event a success!

Troops and officials from CFB Borden and the wider community together officially unveiled the new cenotaph inaugurated at the Barrie Campus on Thursday, October 6. Your Alumni Association donated $10,000 to this project. The cenotaph will be inaugurated at this year’s Remembrance Day service on a very symbolical date – 11/11/11. SAVE THE DATE!

On June 7, Victoria Martin Evans was presented with an International Business Plan Award from the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT) at an awards ceremony in Gatineau, Quebec.
The International Business Management graduate received the highest grade for submitting a completed business plan for the FITT skills course in International Trade Management.

Georgian College is blazing a new trail in the academic sector by becoming the first college in Ontario to secure a $1-million endowed chair.
The donation has been made by Henry Bernick, an entrepreneur and Barrie’s first land developer, who has been instrumental in the growth of the local real estate market since the 1950s. He has given the gift, which includes an additional $500,000 to create the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre, with a goal of supporting entrepreneurship education and encouraging innovation in his hometown. The Centre is set to open in January 2012.

Georgian College’s newest campus will be named the John Di Poce South Georgian Bay Campus. The name for the new facility, located at the intersection of Poplar Sideroad and Raglan Street in Collingwood, was officially unveiled at a news conference at Cranberry Resort this month.
The name honours the key donor to the project – developer John Di Poce (pictured above middle, with his wife, Marie, and Georgian President and CEO Brian Tamblyn).

The Government of Canada recently announced funding for Riptide Resources, the publisher of Motorcycle Mojo magazine. First published in 2002, this magazine is owned by alumna Gwen Roberts (School of Design and Visual Arts 1978, Barrie Campus) and her husband Glenn. As a high-end motorcycle magazine, it deals with all makes of street bikes, travel destinations and an offering of new products.

Jason Pineau (Business Admin-Prof Golf Management 2000, Orillia campus) makes a difference in the lives of orphans in Africa. Along with his wife Kim, they donated 55 solar lights so Tanzanian children can continue their studies in the dark.

At convocation ceremonies Oct. 26, the Board of Governors awarded two honourary Bachelor of Applied Studies Degrees.
The first was presented to Brian Bentz, the President and CEO of PowerStream Inc. Throughout his career at PowerStream, Brian has always kept Georgian College top of mind. As a graduate of Georgian himself, he was a driving force in the development of the new Centre for Sustainable Technologies. Under his leadership, $750,000 was donated to Georgian from PowerStream for the new centre.
The second honourary degree recipient was Laura Formusa, President and CEO of Hydro One. In 2008, Laura oversaw the development of a unique Hydro One partnership with Georgian and three other Ontario colleges. Hydro One contributed $3 million over four years for scholarships, program development, co-op placements and equipment.
The Honourary Bachelor of Applied Studies degree is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to society, achieved noted accomplishments in a particular field of study or applied education, and enhanced or promoted the College’s image and reputation in Ontario or elsewhere.

Four hundred community leaders and friends of Georgian College came together in support of Georgian students at the third Dream Catcher Gala on Oct. 22. The black tie event, held at Casino Rama, was a huge success, raising approximately $130,000 for awards and scholarships and the Centre for Health and Wellness.

Jonathan Gushue (Hotel & Resort Operations 1993/Culinary Management 1994, Barrie Campus), executive chef at Langdon Hall in Cambridge, ON, has much to celebrate! Recently Langdon Hall was awarded the esteemed S. Pellegrino World’s 100 Best Restaurants for 2010. The first time a Canadian establishment has made the list since 2003, Gushue’s five-course tasting menu—employing locally produced foods, including maple syrup, wild garlic, leeks and ginger from the Langdon Hall gardens—receives culinary kudos!

The Centre for Health and Wellness construction project is surging ahead, and the Power of Education Campaign, a source of funding for the Centre, continues to make progress as well. To date, $21.6 million of the $25 million campaign goal has been raised thanks to generous donors, a committed team of senior volunteers, Georgian staff, students, the Students’ Administrative Council, alumni, the Alumni Association and Board of Governors’ members.
Georgian alumni who know of an organization, business, or individual who want to be a part of this project can e-mail the campaign team at rtruax@georgianc.on.ca. Every donation helps, every cent is appreciated and every donor is recognized in a variety of ways. There are a variety of naming opportunities available in the new building. Three Georgian Ski Resort Operations (SRO) graduates were recently featured in Ski Area Management (SAM) magazine, the “official voice of the mountain resort industry in North America.”
The alumni – Mike Green, Janet Hutzul and John Henry Oates – were featured in a cover story on 10 up-and-coming industry leaders. Rhonda Baxter (Hospitality and Tourism 1988, Barrie Campus) entered a contest to carry the Vancouver 2010 Olympic torch and won! Her experience has left her with a memory she will cherish forever: ”I was so proud to carry the Olympic flame…as I was the only person in the world to have it at that exact moment”.

Jon Montgomery (CAI 2000, Barrie Campus) has won the gold in men’s Skeleton. He was sitting in second with one race to go, but put in an amazing perfomance to take the gold at the Whistler Sliding Centre. He edged Latvia’s Martins Dukurs by just 0.07 seconds.
Dukurs who led the competition after Day 1, and through three runs was sitting 0.18s ahead of Jon, but Jon laid down a track record-setting time in his opening run on Friday to pull closer to that gold medal with one heat to go. And he saved his best start for last, clocking a time of 4.61s en route to a 52.36s run.
