• Sign up now for 3-Pitch Softball

  It’s that time of year again, the weather is warming up and the grass is starting to turn green and that means it’s time for another exciting season of Georgian Barrie’s Co-Rec 3-Pitch Softball League.

  Running from May 21^st through July 31^st the league is open to men’s and women’s players of all skill levels.  You can sign up your teams of up to 15 players (minimum 2 women) at the Athletic & Fitness Centre Customer Service Desk at the Barrie Campus for a registration fee of $150 which includes a t-shirt for each team member.

  Teams will play one to two games per week which will be scheduled Monday’s to Thursday’s at either 4:10pm or 5:10pm.

  You must be currently enrolled at Georgian College or be a staff member to participate.

• Georgian Grizzlies 43rd Annual Awards Winners

  Barrie, ON – April 4th, 2013 - The Georgian Grizzlies held their 43^rd Annual Varsity Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 4^th at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie.  It was a great celebration of the tremendous accomplishments made by Georgian student athletes during the 2012-2013 OCAA season.

  There were many achievements recognized throughout the evening but arguably the big winner on the night was golfer Colton Kalkanis.

  Kalkanis took home the Cloutier Cup as Georgian’s Male Athlete of Year as well as Male Rookie of the Year and Golf’s Male Most Valuable Player awards.  The native of Hillsdale, ON had a big season becoming the first Ontario Colleges Athletic Association male golfer to win both the OCAA Provincial Individual Championship as well as the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Individual Championship.

  Women’s Volleyball star Natalie Buck took home the Greer Trophy as Female Athlete off the Year after a tremendous year on the court.  The Keswick, ON native was among the leaders statistically in all of Ontario this season and helped guide her team to a fourth place finish at the OCAA Provincial Championships.  The fourth year outside hitter was an OCAA First Team All-Star and was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the OCAA Provincial Championships.

  Other major award winners on the night included women’s volleyball player Allison Marshall (Orillia, ON) who was named Female Rookie of the Year, Andrew Hill (King City, ON) who was presented the McKillican Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Georgian Athletic Department and Ben Dance (Bolton, ON) was presented the Howard/Belcourt Award for Outstanding Sportsmanship, Dedication, Commitment, Attitude and Leadership.

  An incredible twenty-eight athletes received an OCAA All Academic Award for achieving an average of 80% or higher while also representing the college as a varsity athlete.  Among that group were Rebecca Trischler (Milton, ON) and Ben Dorfling (Barrie, ON) who were also presented Academic-Athletic Excellence Awards for achieving the highest level of success by a student athlete.

  Male Athlete of the Year – Cloutier Cup 

  Colton Kalkanis – Golf 

  Kalkanis put together one of the finest season’s in Grizzlies history.  The Hillsdale, ON native won three individual tournaments during the season including the 2012 PING CCAA National Golf Championship, the 2012 OCAA Men’s Individual Championship and the Durham College Open.  In doing so he became the first OCAA male golfer to win the individual championship at both the provincial and national level in the same year.  The first year Golf Course Operation and Grounds Management student was named a CCAA All-Canadian along with receiving CCAA Male Athlete of the Week honours on October 23^rd and was OCAA Male Athlete of the Week October 23^rd & October 9^th.

  Female Athlete of the Year – Greer Trophy

  Natalie Buck – Volleyball

  A fourth year outside hitter from Keswick, Ontario, Natalie Buck has continued to emerge as the leader of the women’s volleyball team while elevating her game to be one of the best players in the entire OCAA.  Buck put together an impressive season scoring 190 kills (5^th OCAA), 45 serving aces (T-6^th OCAA), 26 blocks (T-22^nd OCAA) which places her 4^th overall in the OCAA in points.  She was a key contributor in the success of her team which put together an impressive 15-5 record good enough for a 3^rd place position in east division regular season standings.  She put together a 12 point effort in the Grizzlies playoff win over Sheridan to earn a spot at the provincials.  Buck played an instrumental role in helping Georgian reach the bronze medal game at the OCAA Provincial Championship and was named to the OCAA All-Tournament Team.  She was named an East Division First Team All-Star and represented Georgian at the OCAA All-Star Game where she was named player of the game for the east.

  Rookie of the Year Award

  Female:         Allison Marshall – Volleyball

  Marshall made an immediate impact in her freshman year with the Grizzlies.  The middle from Orillia, ON emerged as one of the premier players on this year’s women’s volleyball team and around the OCAA, playing like a veteran.  She put up impressive stats with 147 kills (1^st among rookies, 11^th overall in OCAA), 52 serving aces (3^rd among rookies, T-4^th OCAA), 45 stuff blocks (2^nd rookies, 5^th OCAA) and in overall points (1^st rookies, T-11^th OCAA).  Marshall was a key factor to help guide the Grizzlies to a 4^th place finish at the OCAA Provincials and was an OCAA East Division Second Team All-Star.

  Male:              Colton Kalkanis – Golf

  Putting together a strong first year, Kalkanis was able to separate himself from what was a very strong rookie class with the Grizzlies.  In addition to his individual success winning the national and provincial championships, Kalkanis was a key contributor to his team’s success this season.  The Hillsdale, ON native made a significant impact in helping the Georgian Men’s Golf Team to a 5^th place finish at the CCAA National Golf Championship along with a silver medal finish at the OCAA Provincials where the Grizzlies came within three strokes of defeating perennial contender Humber College for gold.  The team also had a first place finish at the Durham Open and a 2^nd place finish at the Fanshawe Fall Classic.

  Howard/Belcourt Award

  Ben Dance – Men’s Basketball 

  The Howard/Belcourt Award is presented to an athlete that displays outstanding sportsmanship, dedication, commitment, attitude and leadership.

  Dance, a guard from Bolton, ON has been the definition of a hard working student athlete during his time at Georgian and is well respected by his peers, coaches and opponents in the league.  His positive outlook and attitude served as constant motivation for his team during his career with the Grizzlies. Graduating this year with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, Dance also achieved success on the court leading the Grizzlies in scoring this season while known throughout the OCAA as one of the top three-point threats.

  McKillican Trophy

  Andrew Hill  – Badminton

  The McKillican Trophy was established by Dr. Donald McKillican a former Student Service Director at Georgian College.  The award is for outstanding contribution to the Athletic Department by a student.

  A member of the Georgian Grizzlies Badminton Team, Andrew Hill has displayed incredible dedication to his team and to Georgian Athletics this season and over his last three years.  On the court, Hill had a great year earning a spot in the east regional bronze medal match.  The native of King City, ON is a tremendous supporter of his teammates and always willing to help out his coaches, whether it’s setting up for practice, photography or video he has been always there to help.  Andrew volunteered his time at the 2013 CCAA Badminton National Championship serving at the draw desk and was a huge reason for the success of the tournament.

   Academic & Athletic Excellence Award

  Female:         Rebecca Trischler – Badminton

  Trischler, a native of Milton, ON enjoyed tremendous success both on and off the court this year.  She achieved an incredible 91% average as a third year student in the Hotel and Resort Administration program.  On the court Trischler won a gold medal at the OCAA East Regionals, a bronze medal at OCAA Provincial Championship and finished 4^th at the CCAA Badminton National Championship in women’s doubles along with partner Carolyn Tubman.

  Male:              Ben Dorfling – Rugby

  Flanker Ben Dorfling of Barrie, ON has combined excellence in the classroom with excellence on the field.  The Barrie native achieved an 83% average in his second year in the Aviation Management program while being a standout on this year’s rugby team.  On the pitch, his first with the Grizzlies Rugby team, Dorfling quickly emerged as one of the hardest working players on the team while displaying great knowledge of the game.  His relentless defending was on full display all season and was recognized as an OCAA All-Star.

• Georgian Extramural Cricket Champs

  March 25th, 2013 - Brampton, ON -  The Georgian College Extramural Indoor Cricket Team had their final tournament of the season competing at the highest level at the 2013 Challenge Cup which took place Monday at the Sheridan College Davis Campus in Brampton.

  The Challenge Cup brings together the top Ontario College Campus Recreation teams to compete for the championship.  This year’s championship tournament was a first for indoor cricket, a fast growing game across Ontario.

  Georgian found some strong competition in their first match against the University of Toronto Mississauga team but were able to pull out the win 41-40 with four balls remaining.

  The momentum from the first game carried into their semi-final match for Georgian as they faced Centennial College.  After Centennial put up 26 runs, Georgian took over and were able to come up with a 27-26 victory with 10 balls to spare which set up a finals match against their rivals from Sheridan College.

  The top two seeds coming into the tournament, this was the match both teams looked forward to the most.  Sheridan had given Georgian their toughest challenge over the past number of seasons, but this time it was the college to the north that would come out on top.

  Sheridan set the bar high by putting up 48 runs, but Georgian was up to the task, chipping away and putting runs on the board.

  After putting up 22 runs after two overs, Georgian needed to keep it going.  They were able to pull closer and trail by just four after four overs, leaving them needing four runs off five balls to win the championship.

  With the match on the line, Georgian came through when it mattered most scoring four runs on their second to last ball to take the match and the Challenge Cup with a 51-48 victory.

  For Georgian Team Captain Abdallah Muhammad the win was extra special.

  “After five years of coming up short, finally beating Sheridan is a great feeling,” said the player of the game.  “We had such a good group of guys who spent endless hours practicing.  We were practicing four hours at a time, we had sixteen practices in March alone, and we earned this win.”

• Grizzlies gain valuable experience at provincials

  March 21st, 2013 – Vaughan, ON  - After clinching their first berth at the OCAA women’s indoor soccer provincial championships the Georgian Grizzlies broke new ground by competing at the highest level Thursday at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ontario.

  The Grizzlies didn’t let their inexperience show in their first match against the Conestoga Condors.

  Despite trailing 1-0 in the second half, Georgian battled back with a goal from Barrie native Nikki Baker to even things up. Unfortunately for Georgian the Condors were able to get a late bounce and capitalized on their chance handing the Grizzlies a 2-1 loss.

  Up next for the Grizzlies were the always tough Humber Hawks.

  Georgian went toe-to-toe with their rivals with Grizzlies goalkeeper Alanna Homenuk of Barrie giving the Grizzlies every chance to win.  Late in the game Humber was able to get one by, to take the match 1-0.

  The Grizzlies ended the day with a game against the Centennial Colts. After a scoreless first half the Colts struck first but the Grizzlies wasted no time getting the equalizer on a great effort from Sabrina Bigras to even things 1-1.

  Centennial were able to pull ahead and reclaim the lead yet again on a great individual effort but the Grizzlies continued to battle.

  In the dying minutes the Grizzlies through everything they had at the Colts and came within inches of tying the game after Sabrina Bigras hit the post, but it wasn’t meant to be as Centennial took the match 2-1.

  The loss eliminated the Grizzlies from the tournament, ending their season but was a tremendous year on the pitch and the steps made this year by the program will continue to build in the future.

• Grizzlies make history with provincial berth

  Thursday, March 7th, 2013 - It was a big day for the Georgian Grizzlies women’s indoor soccer program as they clinched a berth in the OCAA Championship after winning their pool at the regional qualifier hosted by Redeemer University College on Thursday, March 7^th.

  The Grizzlies put together an impressive performance leading to a 2-0-1 record finishing tops of their pool made up of the Durham Lords, Redeemer Royals and the Sault Cougars.

  Delta Pilote scored the lone goal for the Grizzlies in their first match, giving Georgian an important tournament opening 1-1 draw against the Durham Lords.

  The Grizzlies carried that momentum forward through the rest of the tournament with Pilote scoring again in a 1-0 victory over Redeemer which set up a final match against Sault College which with a win would clinch first overall spot in their pool for Georgian.

  In one of their best efforts of the season the Grizzlies pulled out a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal by Nikki Baker who capped off a great performance throughout the day.

  Grizzlies’ goalkeeper Allana Homenuk was strong in net allowing only one goal in the three games and posting two shutouts.

  The first place finish gives Georgian their first ever berth in the OCAA Championship which will take place on March 21^st-22^nd at the OSA Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Ontario hosted by Conestoga College.

• Grizzlies fall short at regionals

  Vaughan, ON  – March 5th, 2013 - It was the biggest tournament of the season for the Georgian Grizzlies men’s indoor soccer team as they headed to the Ontario Soccer Association Soccer Centre in Vaughan, ON to compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) regionals on Tuesday, March 5^th.

  On the line was a spot in the OCAA Championship in a few weeks but to get there the Grizzlies would have to get passed some stiff competition in the Algoma Thunderbirds, Fanshawe Falcons and Seneca Sting.

  Up first for Georgian were the Falcons from London.

  The Grizzlies controlled much of the match and put together arguably their best start of the season.  A brilliant goal by Brennan Reynolds-Baker gave Georgian a much important lead, but in the late stages it all fell apart.

  Some undisciplined play by the Grizzlies led to two quick goals in the dying minutes to give the Falcons the lead and the win.

  With their backs against the wall, Georgian needed to find a way to win their match against Algoma to have any hopes of earning a spot out of their pool to qualify for the provincials.

  The Grizzlies responded coming out of the gate strong and goals by Reynolds-Baker and Marcus Lees gave Georgian the lead.  The Thunderbirds continued to pressure the Grizzlies and were able to get a goal to pull within one but that was as close as they could get.

  The win set up a must win game for the Grizzlies but the task wouldn’t be easy as they faced last year’s silver medalists, the Seneca Sting.

  Georgian was able to hold their own against a very strong Sting squad.  Marcus Lees continued to dazzle on the pitch but two narrow misses that hit the goal post kept the Grizzlies from getting the board. 

  With the Grizzlies down 2-0 they took their chances on offence but were unable to get on the board and eventually fell in a hard fought battle 3-0 to the Sting.

  The loss eliminated the Grizzlies from contention but with a great effort and season of development under Head Coach Frank Delisimunovic, Georgian has set themselves up for future success going forward.

• Grizzlies finish strong as Georgian hosts successful nationals
  

  Grizzlies Rebecca Trischler and Carolyn Tubman finished 4th in women’s doubles

  It was a big week as Georgian College played host to the 2013 CCAA Badminton National Championship from February 27^th through March 2^nd at the Barrie campus.

  Georgian welcomed the top student athletes in all of Canadian college athletics for three days of competition along with a special opening ceremony and awards banquet.

  During the banquet held at the Last Class Grizzlies Head Coach David Wesley was named CCAA Badminton Coach of the Year.  Under Wesley’s leadership, the Grizzlies captured gold in men’s singles and men and women’s doubles at the east regionals this year.

  On the court there was some incredible feats achieved as Dan Kai of NAIT in Alberta won his 5^th men’s singles gold medal while Douglas College’s RuiLin Huang of BC won her fifth consecutive gold medal in women’s singles.

  The Grizzlies were well represented throughout the event and were impressive at the national level.

  Georgian’s Rebecca Trischler and Carolyn Tubman made it all the way to the bronze medal match and finished an incredible 4th in Canada.

  The duo weren’t the only Georgian students who performed well as Sean Irving finished 5^th in men’s singles, McLean Brownlee and Trevor Neville finished 5^th in men’s doubles and Logan Dayus and Maggie Tremblay were 6^th in mixed doubles.

  Next year’s championship will be held at NAIT in Edmonton, Alberta who will have plenty to live up to after the event put on at Georgian College.

  An event like this cannot be achieved without the help of organizations such as Sport Canada, Black Knight, Jostens, The Scoreboard Man, Nevco, Gym-Con Ltd, the CCAA, the OCAA and the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Barrie along with the many volunteers who graciously gave their time and effort to make this an incredibly successful event.
