Grizzlies Advance to Semis

Barrie, ON. – The Georgian Grizzlies men’s rugby team advanced to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) semi-finals with a 58-39 win over the Fleming Auks in an OCAA qualifying playoff game this afternoon at the Jim Hamilton Rugby Field.

Fleming jumped out to a 10-0 lead, before Georgian responded with four consecutive tries. However, the Auks finished off the half strong, with two tries and a penalty kick, to lead 25-22 at the half.

The offensive fireworks continued for both teams early in the second half, as each team scored 2 tries in the first 15 minutes. With the Auks leading 39-34, Georgian scored four consecutive tries to finish the game and put an end to Fleming’s season.

Chris Wood, Matt Cotter and Gary Smith each scored two tries for the Grizzlies, while Mike Tepera, Ken Benoit, Perry Coldrick and Steve Sasseville added one apiece. Coldrick also kicked 4 converts.

The Grizzlies will play the two-time defending champion Loyalist Lancers next Saturday afternoon in Belleville with the winner advancing to the OCAA Championship.
