Roseneath, PE – The Georgian Grizzlies had a tough opening day at the 2011 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf Championships at Brudenell River Golf Course.
Keegan Tyers was the top Georgian golfer, firing a 78, after shooting 42 on the front nine. Paul Ngimat was the only other Grizzly to break 80, finishing with a 79. Rookie Frank Giacomelli finished with 81 and Nolan Knill was three-over par heading into the final two holes, but ran into trouble on the par 5 17th, carding a 9 and finishing with an 82. Eric Adamo shot 85.
The team finished with a team total of 320 and currently sit in a tie for 9th position.
The first day was much better for the Georgian women. Rookie Nicole Belcourt shot 84 and is in a three-way tie for 5th place in the individual competition. Her teammate Jasmine Paton shot 92, giving the Grizzlies a team total of 176. The team is in 5th place, six strokes out of a medal position.
Day two of the 54-hole event is scheduled for tomorrow, but the area is expected to be hit with heavy rainfall overnight and into the morning.
