Dragon shares inspiring life lessons

You don’t have to be born into a privileged environment to have a life that is very special and privileged. That was one of the many messages delivered by marketing guru and Dragons’ Den star Arlene Dickinson during a talk at the Barrie Campus on March 28. Dickinson told a packed crowd in the Georgian College Theatre about her rags-to-riches experience, employing a variety of stories about her troubled family growing up, living in poverty and a difficult marriage.

Dickinson shared her entrepreneurial know-how and some personal life lessons with a packed crowd in the Georgian Theatre.

“We’ve lost the art of storytelling,” she said, adding that storytelling is one of the best ways people can learn from each other.

Sharing failures, successes and vulnerabilities can lead to greater understanding of ourselves and others, she also commented. Dickinson emphasized her staunch opposition to Dragons’ Den co-star Kevin O’Leary’s opinion that “emotion doesn’t belong in business,” which drew laughter and cheers from the audience.

Dickinson revealed many of her successes and failures, adding a good dose of humour to each tale. Finishing high school at 16, she was married at 19 and had four children in the next seven years. She worked so her husband could get a degree and then divorced. A judge told her the only way she could keep her children was if she got a job, so Dickinson worked for a collection agency out of her kitchen. In between collection calls she would receive calls from collection agencies about her own unpaid bills.

With no experience, Dickinson talked her way into a sales job at a TV station and became a star salesperson. When that job ended, she joined associates in a new marketing company, Venture Communications, making no money for two-and-a-half years.

She admits to making a lot of mistakes along the way.

“That’s what business is about – being that close to messing it up,” she emphasized, holding her thumb and forefinger close together.

Dickinson learned from those mistakes and became the sole owner of Venture a decade later. The company is now one of the largest independent marketing firms in Canada, with 75 employees and $45-million in gross sales. Dickinson has also achieved fame as a co-star of the hit CBC show Dragons’ Den, where she is known by many as the ‘shrewd yet compassionate’ Dragon.

Dickinson believes the secret to success is threefold: hope, genuine interest and gratitude.

Dickinson believes the secret to success is threefold: hope, genuine interest and gratitude.

Many students dreaming of a successful career attended the event, hosted by the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre, opening this spring at the Barrie Campus. Dickinson’s advice to them was to take a look at the situation they’re in and see the value in it even if it seems like a bad one. And “be true to who you are.”

On November 29, a panel of four alumni from Georgian’s Human Resources Management Graduate Certificate Program returned to Georgian to share their experiences and knowledge with current students on the topics of Occupational Health and Safety and Employee Relations. This unique opportunity allowed current students to discover how the material they are studying relates to the real world challenges in industry professionals face on a daily basis.

The alumni panel was comprised of representatives from some of the largest companies presently operating in Canada including Linda Gierak, Human Resources Advisor, People and Culture Department for RONA, Steve Lajoie, Operations Team Leader, for General Mills Pillsbury, Charlene Turner, District Talent Manager Central Ontario, for Home Depot, and Tammagen Walker, Recruitment Coordinator, for PowerStream.

The panelists addressed accident prevention, employee wellness, as well as issues and challenges involved in the daily administration of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The discussion then transitioned to an examination of strategies for successful Employee Relations involving employee engagement, communication, employee privacy, dignity in the retirement process, and fair treatment surrounding difficult decisions like layoffs, downsizing, discipline, and dismissal.

Georgian’s Human Resources Management Graduate Program diligently partners with its graduates to ensure that our students have access to their knowledge and experience.

The “Georgian Mind Mappers” as we were called, are delighted with the results.  The team captured Silver medals in the Direct Marketing and Executive Job Interview events, and secured a bronze medal in Marketing Research case event. We also took a fifth place finish in the Marketing and International case events. Once again, this was quite a feat as this year’s team was made up of second-year Advertising, Automotive and Marketing students who were up against stiff competition from third-year students from 13 other colleges.

So … you want to be an Entrepreneur!  Have we got the program for you!!

Georgian College has received formal approval from The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer two new programs in Entrepreneurship

In today’s economic climate, small business in Canada account for over 98% of the total number of business firms in Canada. Since 1989, 75% of job growth has been through self-employment, and this trend is expected to continue in future years. With the long-term decline in some major industries, Canada will be turning more to innovative small businesses to create new international markets for specialized goods and services.

To assist new entrepreneurs, Georgian will launch the new graduate-level certificate program in May 2012.  The new two-year, diploma program will follow with its launch in September of 2012.

For more information on these programs, please visit the Entrepreneurship Centre web page.

Staff members greeted the group at various checkpoints and provided helpful information, educating the group on the industry and answering any questions. Students left feeling inspired and excited about a career in the aviation industry and beginning their education at Georgian College.

“This was a unique way to showcase the Aviation Management program to prospective students,” says Barb Watts, Associate Dean, Canadian Aviation Institute.

Georgian College will celebrate 25 years offering aviation studies at the Barrie Campus. The three-year Aviation Management advanced diploma program incorporates a full-year of co-op placements. Sven Hansen, a student in Georgian College’s Business Administration – Marketing program, has been named 2010 Co-op Student of the Year by the Canadian Association of Co-operative Education (CAFCE). He is also Georgian College’s Co-op Student of the Year.

Hansen, winner of the college student category, shares the national honour with university student Melissa Bailey of the University of Manitoba. Hansen returned to school in 2009 as a mature student. Although he could have applied for prior learning assessment for his co-op work terms, Hansen recognized the valuable opportunity available through his program and was determined to make the most of co-operative education.

After being selected for a co-operative education posting as Student Activities Assistant with Georgian’s International Education and Training department, he was told “this job is what you make it.” Taking that advice, he created a world of meaningful experiences that allowed international students to learn about real life in Canada.

“Instead of the standard Niagara Falls and CN Tower trips, Sven had our students at hockey games, skiing and snowboarding, the Toronto Auto Show, the King Tut exhibition, celebrated Chinese New Year and Diwali and created personal connections with all our students,” said Lindsay Byers, who helped nominated him for the award.

Another nominator, Christine Munro, praised him for his “strong sense of commitment and dedication … he often went beyond his job responsibilities.”

Hansen said his co-op work term helped him “gain vast amounts of experience dealing with diversity and cultural differences…these skills will prove to be a priceless asset throughout my career.” Without co-op, he said, his portfolio of related work experience would have been limited, and the skills he has now developed would have been “unimaginable.”

“Co-op education was one of the best choices I have ever made in my life,” he said.

Hansen also volunteered to create a virtual tour of the college for the Georgian website, after learning from students that they were anxious to learn more about Georgian before leaving their home countries to attend college in Canada. In total, he completed two co-op terms with the International department. Hansen has now been hired on contract in an administrative role in the department.

In addition to receiving a certificate and plaque from CAFCE recognizing their achievement, Hansen and Bailey each receive the $500 Emery-Dufault Award along with a $500 CAFCE Award. The award recognizes contributions of two founding members of co-operative education in Canada, Dr. Charles Leslie (Les) Emery and Professor George Joseph Dufault.

Each year CAFCE recognizes outstanding co-op student achievement from both the college and university level. Co-op offices across Canada will be celebrating this and other co-op initiatives during National Co-operative Education Week, March 21 to 25, 2011.
