Professional sommeliers are well-versed in food and wine pairing and have in-depth knowledge of other beverages and how they relate to food.<span id="more-268"></span></p>
<p>Georgian College, in conjunction with the <a href="http://www.capsontario.ca/">Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS)</a>, offers the CAPS Certified Sommelier Certificate program. Upon successful completion of the program, you receive sommelier certification from CAPS and a joint certificate from CAPS and Georgian College.</p>

<p class="note"><strong>Please note:</strong> Medical reasons notwithstanding, should an individual withdraw from any course, a 25 per cent cancellation fee is automatically deducted from the registration fee. If withdrawing with less than 48 hours notice prior to course commencement, there is no refund. <p>This certificate program provides students with the knowledge of guest services operations. Students will also acquire skills in business computer applications and customer service. This certificate is geared for those who currently have no experience in the field of hospitality, tourism and recreation.<span id="more-216"></span></p>

<h2>Admission Requirements</h2>
<div>
<p>Applicants following the OSIS curriculum must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD-30 credits) at the general level or equivalent. Applicants following the OSS curriculum must have as OSSD or equivalent. OSIS applicants also require a minimum of Grade 12 English at the general level. OSS applicants require Grade 12 English (C) or (U) (ENG4C, ENG4U).</p>
<p>Applicants who are 19 years of age or over by the first day of classes, and who lack the academic admissions qualifications, may be considered for entrance as mature students. Each applicant will be considered on an individual basis and acceptance will determined by counseling, College Placement Assessment (CPA), previous post-secondary requirements that must be met prior to admission. Mature applicants must meet all program specific prerequisites. Those applying as mature students and having no documentation of Grade 12 education must supply, if requested, proof of age, such as a copy of an official birth certificate or driver&#8217;s license.</p>

<h2>Graduation Eligibility</h2>
<div>
<p>To graduate from this program, the passing weighted average for promotion through each semester, from year to year and to graduate is 60%. Additionally, a student must attain a minimum of 50% or a letter grade of P(Pass) or S(Satisfactory) in each course in each semester.</p>

<p>This program is designed to upgrade and enhance the knowledge and skill levels of Food Service Workers currently employed by Health Care Facilities. The curriculum focuses on the role of the Food Service Worker and the importance of issues such as safety, sanitation and nutrition.<span id="more-214"></span></p>
<p>Industry-specific topics include: Introduction to Institutional Food Services, Food Preparation 1 Basic, Food Safety and Workplace Safety, Food Preparation 2, Nutritional Care, Food Service Management Functions.</p>
<h2>Career Opportunities</h2>
<p>The food service worker can work in long-term care facilities, hospitals, health care institutions, schedule 1 facilities, group homes, retirement homes, meals-on-wheels suppliers, school cafeterias, daycare centres for children and the elderly, day nurseries, corrections institutions and camps.</p>
<h2>Practical Experience</h2>
<p>In order to reinforce skills and theory, the applicants who do not currently work in the kitchen of a health care facility will have a field training requirement. The field training component is 60 hours of practical experience.</p>

<h2>Admission Requirements</h2>

<p>Priority will be given to those currently employed in the food service department of a health care or long-term care facility for a minimum of one year. Applicants require good communication skills and should have Grade 10 level English. In addition to admission requirements, applicants for whom English is a second language must provide proof of language proficiency.</p>
</div>
<h2>Graduation Eligibility</h2>

<p>Students must successfully complete all six modules and the field training within four years to receive the Food Service Worker Recognition of Successful Completion. Students are required to attend 80 per cent of all classes.</p>

<p><strong>Food Service Worker Program eligibility:</strong><br />
Some modules contain additional certifications. A passing per cent for the additional certifications is specific to the standards set out by the governing body of that certification. A passing grade of 60 per cent must be achieved in each module and will be evaluated with a letter grade of P (Pass).</p>
