This program is designed to upgrade and enhance the knowledge and skill levels of Food Service Workers currently employed by Health Care Facilities. The curriculum focuses on the role of the Food Service Worker and the importance of issues such as safety, sanitation and nutrition.
Industry-specific topics include: Introduction to Institutional Food Services, Food Preparation 1 Basic, Food Safety and Workplace Safety, Food Preparation 2, Nutritional Care, Food Service Management Functions.
The food service worker can work in long-term care facilities, hospitals, health care institutions, schedule 1 facilities, group homes, retirement homes, meals-on-wheels suppliers, school cafeterias, daycare centres for children and the elderly, day nurseries, corrections institutions and camps.
In order to reinforce skills and theory, the applicants who do not currently work in the kitchen of a health care facility will have a field training requirement. The field training component is 60 hours of practical experience.
Applicants require good communication skills and should have Grade 10 level English. In addition to admission requirements, applicants for whom English is a second language must provide proof of language proficiency.
Students must successfully complete all six modules and the field training within four years to receive the Food Service Worker Recognition of Successful Completion. Students are required to attend 80 per cent of all classes.

Food Service Worker Program eligibility:
Some modules contain additional certifications. A passing per cent for the additional certifications is specific to the standards set out by the governing body of that certification. A passing grade of 60 per cent must be achieved in each module and will be evaluated with a letter grade of P (Pass).
