Portfolio Criteria

Applicants are accepted into programs based on College admission requirements and on the strength of a portfolio. If a portfolio does not meet the necessary standards, applicants are considered for acceptance to the Art & Design Fundamentals program as an alternate program choice.

Letter of Intent

A letter of intent should clearly outline reasons for your program choice, your career goals, and a description of personal abilities and attitudes which will help you in achieving these goals. The letter should be edited for grammar, spelling, and clarity, and should be produced using word processing computer software. Please ensure the letter is included in your portfolio.

Portfolio

A portfolio should demonstrate readiness to enter and succeed in the chosen program. It should contain twelve pieces of your best original work. Photocopies are not recommended. Label your artwork 1 through 12 and include a typed sheet that briefly describes the work and media used. For example: Drawing #1: still life / pen & ink

Evaluation Criteria

The faculty team assessing your work will be looking for:

  • originality (copies of existing work or clip art are not acceptable)
  • personal expression and creativity
  • competence in the use of line, tone, texture, perspective, light, and shadow
  • evidence of understanding of colour relationships and effective applications
  • use of a variety of media
  • presentation, organization of material, matting, mounting etc.

Portfolio Criteria

Digital Photography

6 Photographic Pieces
  • may include photographs created with a film based camera or a digital camera
  • may include photographs manipulated either by hand (ie: in the darkroom) or by computer
  • may include a website that displays your photographs
  • may include examples of your work on CD Rom
6 Pieces of Your Choice
  • may include additional photographs
  • may include work using any other medium of your choice

Fine Arts & Fine Arts Advanced

3 Drawings Using Any Medium
  • choose from still life, figure, landscape, interiors, and /or technical drawings
3 Works in Colour
  • can include paintings, drawings, and /or computer-generated work
6 Works of Your Choice Focused on Fine Arts
  • can include a sketch book as one choice
  • can include sculpture, models of buildings, ceramics etc.
  • photographs of three-dimensional work are acceptable but originals are preferred

can include any of the following:
advertisements, yearbooks, brochures, posters, magazine layouts, logos, etc.

*Please do not submit the following:
anime, superheroes, comic book characters, photographs altered in Photoshop.
