Posted: Thursday, October 14th, 2010 Amnesty International – Taste for Justice Fundraising Champion

Summary: Taste for Justice is an annual Amnesty International fundraising event through which human rights supporters hold a dinner, barbecue, tea party or dessert event to raise money towards Amnesty’s work to protect and promote women’s human rights.

 The Taste for Justice Fundraising Champion will register as a Taste for Justice host and hold a dinner party at home, while , and promoting Taste for Justice dinners for 2011. The main goal is to get 10 Taste for Justice dinners to happen in his/her area by the end of 2011.

 The Fundraising Champion is an outgoing, highly personable and professional individual with an interest and commitment to Amnesty International’s human rights work.

 Position title: Taste for Justice Fundraising Champion

Location: Across Canada

Position open to: Amnesty members and non-members

Suitable for: Individuals

Number of positions available: No limit

Time commitment: 2-4 hours per week at first

Duration of appointment: May to December 2011

Application deadline: February 8, 2011

 Responsibilities:

  • Host a Taste for Justice dinner at home with friends and family, with $500 as a minimum fundraising goal
  • Promote Taste for Justice in his/her community: family, friends, neighbourhood, at work, at book clubs.

 Requirements:

  • Experience: Ideally some experience in fundraising and/or marketing would be a great bonus. Otherwise, enthusiasm, creativity, strong interpersonal skills and a solid ability to follow up on and reach goals.
  • Basic understanding of and passion for Amnesty International’s human rights work.
  • Ability and eagerness to work with a wide variety of people and “publics”.

Orientation and training available:

  • Basic background on Amnesty International offered by local Amnesty representative or Committee Chair.
  • Background and history on Taste for Justice, and a backgrounder on Amnesty’s work on women’s human rights.
  • Regular checkins by phone/email at a frequency agreed to by Taste for Justice Coordinator and Fundraising Champion.

Looking for hands-on experience in community fundraising or marketing? Want to learn how to harness use your communications and marketing skills to raise tons of money and awareness for a charity? We’d love for you to join us in 2011 to raise money and awareness for Amnesty International, a respected, credible human rights organisation that works to protect and promote human rights around the world! 

 Summary: Taste for Justice is an annual Amnesty International fundraising event through which restaurants across Canada pick a day in June from which to donate their choice of a percentage of sales towards Amnesty’s work on women’s human rights.

 The Taste for Justice Restaurant Liaison represents Amnesty’s Taste for Justice in his/her city, and may work alone or as part of a team to bring local restaurants on board. S/he will build and manage relationships with participating restaurants. This responsibility involves approaching restaurateurs in person and pitching their participation using the tools provided. The Restaurant Liaison will follow up to confirm participation and remain the primary contact for all restaurants s/he approaches. Responsibilities include answering questions, taking orders for materials, thanking participants personally and picking up the cheque in the latter half of June.

 The Restaurant Liaison is an outgoing, highly personable and professional individual with an interest and commitment to Amnesty International’s human rights work.

 Location: Across Canada

Position open to: Amnesty members and non-members

Suitable for: Individuals and/or groups

Number of positions available: No limit

Time commitment: 4 hours per week at first, 6-10 hours each of the last two weeks.

Duration of appointment: January to June 2011

Application deadline: November 30, 2010

 Responsibilities:

  • Secure the participation of a restaurant (or more) in his/her city on a day in June and a percentage of sales that work for them. This involves approaching restaurateurs in person and pitching their participation using the tools provided.
  • Once restaurant(s) has been confirmed, maintain contact with the restaurant leading up to, on the day of, and right after the event to thank them and collect the money raised.
  • Ensure the display of Taste for Justice posters, flyers, tent cards promoting the day of participation 2 weeks prior to the event.
  • Approach local media (print, radio, tv) to try to get them to cover the event.
  • Be present at the restaurant the day of the event to help distribute materials and answer questions about Amnesty International.
  • Thank the restaurant after the event, and collect the money to mail back to the National Office, using the envelope provided, to: Taste for Justice, Amnesty International, 312 Laurier Ave E, Ottawa, ON, K1N 1H9.

 Requirements:

  • Education: University degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Ideally some experience in fundraising and/or marketing. Would require a background in donor, member or customer relations (face-to-face and by phone). 
  • Basic understanding of and passion for Amnesty International’s human rights work.
  • Any established relationships or experience in the food industry is a great asset.
  • ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL: High competency in verbal and written communication, and an ability to communicate persuasively and diplomatically (excellent phone skills are a must).
  • High comfort level in approaching fast-paced businesses, and persistence in following up.
  • Ability and eagerness to work with a wide variety of people and “publics”.
  • Must have access to a computer to use e-mail, the Internet, Microsoft Excel, printers and photocopiers.
  • Must be mobile or have easy access to transportation in order to visit restaurants.

  • Basic background on Amnesty International offered by local Amnesty representative or Committee Chair.
  • Regular checkins by phone/email at a frequency agreed to by Taste for Justice Coordinator and Restaurant Liaison.

The David Busby Street Centre is in need of volunteers for our drop-in centre.  Like many organizations, the support from our volunteers is what makes us successful. 

Our Mission: Driven by a philosophy of empowerment, The David Busby Street Centre works from a non-judgmental approach to advocate for and improve living conditions for individuals and families within Simcoe County who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

We serve marginalized & vulnerable citizens of Barrie & Simcoe County who suffer from poverty, brain injury, terminal illness, mental health & addictions, loneliness and isolation.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The ideal candidate will support PCPC www.pcpcontario.org  in the planning, development and coordination of the IYC 2012 initiatives.

About the 2012 International Year of Co-operatives (IYC 2012) On December 18, 2009 the UN the General Assembly proclaimed 2012 as the International Year of Co-operatives (IYC) (resolution 64/136 of 18 December 2009). On December 10, 2010 the United Nations officially announced that the theme for the International Year of Co-operatives is “Co-operative enterprises build a better world” / “Les coopératives, des entreprises pour un monde meilleur”.

For this special occasion, PCPC is seeking a fundraising coordinator who will help us to raise awareness within our community.

Work with Nancy Bradley, Executive Director to plan and develop fundraising’s activities around IYC 2012.

Perform other tasks as assigned to support organizational IYC initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work effectively with minimal supervision . Excellent problem solving skills and positive, flexible attitude . Strong inter-personal and teamwork skills, with a genuine enjoyment of working with various people and groups . Ease with establishing contacts and engaging partners or stakeholders . Strong oral and written communication skills . Advanced skills in MS Excel; proficiency in other MS Office programs (Outlook, Word) . Demonstrated ability to multitask and to work in a fast paced and co-operative environment . Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail . Experience with and/or knowledge of co-operatives is an asset

WORKING CONDITIONS: Depending on proximity to PCPC home office in Orillia, most of the work can be done electronically and via teleconference methods.

How Can You Get Involved?
PARTICIPATE: Take part in a Day of Caring! Get together with a group of your peers and work with a non-profit agency or neighbourhood group to complete a much-needed project or hold a special event. Projects are one or two day tasks and can be anything from building a playground, painting a fence, planting a garden, washing windows or cleaning up. This is a great opportunity to work with United Way agency partners and make a visible and valuable contribution to the communities they serve. You can get involved in the planning and coordination of the event or simply attend the Day of Caring and have fun!

VOLUNTEER: Work with United Way’s community investment team to play an essential role in the process of renewing funding agreements, reviewing requests for increases and evaluating new initiatives. You will be assigned to at least one existing or potential agency partner during your term. Along with other volunteers and United Way staff, you will meet with your assigned agency approximately once a year to review recent progress and activities. This is a great way to share existing knowledge and skills and enhance and develop your leadership, problem solving and analysis skills.
DONATE: Get involved in planning a fundraising event for NextGen . Participate in your workplace campaign and take advantage of the ability to donate through payroll deduction. If your employer doesn’t yet conduct a workplace campaign, start one up!

INSPIRE: Join the Youth In Action Granting Review Committee – to help youth with an idea to improve their community, get funds to make it happen! The Director of Public Relations will oversee the creation and production of chapter information and its distribution to members, the general public and the media. S/he will conduct public awareness campaigns, assist fund raising committees with the promotion of their events, provide speakers for community groups and displays for public exhibitions. S/he will oversee the production of a regular Chapter/Unit newsletter and, if applicable, the maintenance of the Chapter/Unit website. S/he will be the chair of the Education Committee, or co-chair of the Public Relations/Education Committee, if either one is formed.
