Cenotaph Project

Help Honour Canadian Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Merchant Navy by Supporting the Cenotaph Project

What is the Cenotaph Project?

Out of respect for Canada’s Armed Forces personnel, Georgian has undertaken a major capital project to restore a new cenotaph at the cost of approximately $235,000. The cenotaph will be a gathering place of peace and reflection for students, staff and visitors alike. While serving as the centerpiece for Georgian’s annual Remembrance Day commemoration, the cenotaph will be accessible year-round as a continual reminder of the heroism and sacrifice of our military.

Why support the Georgian Cenotaph Project?

“Learning and understanding are the first steps in remembrance for younger generations.”
Honourable James Flaherty, Minister of Finance

There are many compelling reasons to support this project.
Most notably, the Georgian College Cenotaph will:

Georgian College Bugler

  • engage the Georgian community, including students, staff and faculty, in proudly creating a monument to remember those who gave their lives so we could be free;
  • embrace the Barrie community as a whole to celebrate Remembrance Day at a location of which, they too, can be proud;
  • provide for unrestricted accessibility to anyone wishing to visit the cenotaph – accessibility that is not available at the current site;
  • enhance the Remembrance Day ceremonies held at the College in partnership with Canadian Forces Base Borden. The current setting for the service is very sparse with only three flag poles providing a focal point for this ceremony.

Save the Date!

You are invited to be a part of an unforgettable celebration! The official unveiling of the new Georgian Cenotaph will be on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. The Georgian Cenotaph will be “inaugurated” on Remembrance Day (11/11/11).
