  • Why test?

Testing in the selection process for career education programs is proven to be constructive and beneficial to both the applicant and the institution to which admission is sought. Results of standardized tests provide an unbiased mechanism for assessing applicants. This combined with grades from previous education will help the college to select those applicants that are most likely to be successful in their chosen program.

  • What does the test cover?

The HOAE covers spelling, reading comprehension, natural sciences like chemistry, biology and physics, arithmetic, perceptual and word problems. Sample questions for the Health Occupations Aptitude Examination are provided to familiarize you with the format of the examination, the directions for completing each examination part, the types of questions contained in the examination, and the content areas measured by the test questions. These questions will not be found in the examination, nor are answers provided. Specimen Questions for the PSB-Health Occupations Aptitude Examination can be found at www.psbtests.com

  • Is the test the same as CPA?

CPA refers to the College Placement Assessment. It assesses a student for placement into a college level communications course. CPA is conducted after a student has been accepted. HOAE assesses general knowledge and critical thinking skills. You do not have to complete the CPA unless you have been accepted into a Georgian College program.

  • How long is the test?

  • Can I use my test results on the HOAE from last year?

Each application cycle is a new process. These test results can be used for Fall 2012 and Winter 2013 selection. Test results from a previous year cannot be used for selection.

  • How soon will I learn if I passed?

There is no pass mark. Results provide a relative ranking based on averages from all applicants who have taken the HOAE. The results are specific to each particular program. Georgian College uses this information and assigns points. Points achieved through testing results and previous academic grades are combined to give total points. Applicants are then ranked based on these points.

  • If I don’t do well on the test, can I rewrite?

The HOAE is used for selection so rewrites are not allowed. You are eligible to write the HOAE on scheduled test dates once per calendar year.

  • I live further than 3 hours from one of Georgian’s main campuses. Can I have the test sent to me?

Any applicant within a 3-hour drive of any of the campuses where testing takes place is expected to test at the college. If you are further than 3 hours, your situation will be assessed on an individual basis. You must complete the Off-Site Testing Request form.

We strongly recommend that you complete your HOAE test at Georgian College or another college that is conducting the test. If you are unable to do so and are more than 3 hours from a Georgian College campus, you can request off-site testing. It is your responsibility to arrange for an alternate test location (community colleges and universities are the only alternate locations that are accepted) and a qualified invigilator (must be a faculty person or authorized testing staff at a college or university). You are also responsible for any fees charged by the alternate test location. Georgian College does not assume any responsibility for problems encountered at the alternate location.

If you wish to apply for off-site testing complete the following steps:

    1. Book your HOAE test for one of Georgian’s test sessions.
    2. Pay for your test.
    3. Download and complete the Off-Site Testing Request form.
    4. Fax the application to the contact on the application at least 10 days before the date reserved at Georgian College.
    5. If you application is approved, your Georgian reservation will be cancelled and your test will be forwarded to the alternate location.
    6. Check your email that you listed on the form for confirmation of approval.
  • I can’t get to any of the test dates. What do I do?

It is in your best interest to complete the test on one of the scheduled dates. The college will only consider alternate test dates under the most extreme circumstances. Approval would need to be granted by the program Co-ordinator or the college’s Associate Registrar.

  • I wrote / I am writing the HOAE test at another college. Can I use these results?

Applicants who have completed the HOAE at another college for the current application cycle will have their results automatically forwarded to Georgian College through OCAS. Please note however that Georgian College does not accept results of other selection tests from colleges in place of the HOAE.

  • I am scheduled to write the HOAE at Georgian College but there are other colleges I have applied to that require the HOAE. How do I transfer my results to other colleges?

Applicants who have completed the HOAE at Georgian College will have their results automatically forwarded by OCAS to the other colleges requiring the HOAE.

  • I was not able to complete my payment online when booking my reservation. How can I make my payment?

You can make your payment over the phone using a credit card by calling our Registrar’s Office

You can also pay in person by coming into any one of our campuses. You can make your payment by credit card, debit card, money order or cash. Click here for our campus locations

  • Why do I have to write this test when other colleges don’t expect me to?

Every college has the right to set their own admission/selection process. There is a high demand for health science programs at Georgian College and testing assists us in selecting the applicants who are best prepared for the work involved in our programs.

  • Why do I have to do the test when I have just completed Pre-Health Science?

All applicants to health science programs are treated equally and must follow the same admission/selection process.

  • I was accepted into a health science program last year but did not come to the college. Why do I have to test again?

Unfortunately when you made the choice to not attend the college the year you were accepted means you also forfeited your acceptance. You must complete the process if you wish to be considered again. Each year our applicant pool changes and there is no guarantee that the scores you obtained previously will be sufficient to be accepted this year.

  • What is the cost of my program?

To find the cost of your program you should go to the Georgian College web site and search for the program you are interested in.
