Our students make a difference

This time of year, our students participate in the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Student Satisfaction Survey. This is their opportunity to identify areas of strength at Georgian and to support continuous improvement in education.

It is the feedback from this survey that helped the Sadlon Centre for Health and Wellness become a reality. Our students recognized and communicated the need for more space and a new health sciences facility through the KPI, which was then used in our submission for funding to the Ministry of Training, College and Universities. Although many staff, community members and organizations were involved in the building coming to life, the students played a key role in its existence.

This annual census survey targets all students enrolled in full-time programs, with the exception of those in their first semester of study and those enrolled in degree programs provided by our university partners.

It’s an important opportunity each year for students at all 24 Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology to provide their feedback on the quality of programs, facilities, resources and services at the college they attend.

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) also monitors student satisfaction results as part of its quality and accountability framework for colleges.

Our students at Georgian have certainly made a difference in the outstanding programs, services and facilities that we provide in the School of Health and Wellness. Looking forward to the positive feedback!

There isn’t a better time to go and see what the community health clinics in the Sadlon Centre for Health and Wellness have to offer. Each of the five Georgian clinics, along with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care’s Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic are available to provide you with exemplary care and health care information.

Georgian students are receiving hands-on experience with clients in many of the clinics under the supervision of qualified professionals.

Here is a summary of what is available:

Georgian College Optical: Offers a wide variety of the latest styles of men’s and ladies’ fashion eyeglass frames, lenses, coatings and fashion/sport sunglasses – as well as top-quality contact lenses. Opticianry students run a contact lens clinic and assist clients with selecting and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses under the supervision of a Registered Optician.

Georgian Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic: Offers primary care – services that would be provided at any family practice. The clinic has nurse practitioners, RNs and will soon have a pharmacist, social worker and dietician.

Harmonize for Speech, Hearing and Language Clinic: A great community resource for speech, language and hearing services. Services include speech and hearing screenings, public workshops on communication and additional information on local speech and hearing care providers.

Massage Therapy Clinic: Students offer therapeutic massage treatments to members of the community, mentored by a Registered Massage Therapist. Outreach programs allow students to care for clients with complex care needs, such as brain injuries, pregnancy, stroke and more.

Oral Health Clinic: Students from the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs offer preventative oral health care for members of the community. All services provided follow professional standards and current infection control practices. Clinics are supervised by registered dental hygienists, certified dental assistants and dentists.

Spa and Esthetics Clinic: Receive an affordable beauty treatment and support student learning by becoming a client at the state-of-the-art Spa and Esthetics Clinic. Students in the Esthetician program provide services, supervised by professional estheticians. Services provided at the clinic include manicures, pedicures and basic facials.

As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on how amazing 2011 was with the grand opening of the Sadlon Centre for Health and Wellness. It was the largest grand opening event in Georgian College history and a day full of excitement and aspiration.

Our dreams in the School of Health and Wellness have certainly come true with this extraordinary facility. It’s so wonderful to see our students benefit from the hard work of everyone involved in the planning and construction of the new building.

There’s so much to look forward to in 2012 with the opening of the Spa and Esthetics Clinic and the Harmonize for Speech, Hearing and Language Clinic. It will be incredible to see all of our community health clinics in full swing. Stay tuned for more information on an Open House event in the New Year.

To Georgian students, staff, partners and the community, I wish you all a very happy, healthy holiday with friends and family and all the best for 2012.

Sincerely,

Cass

The classrooms, hallways, laboratories and community health clinics are bustling with activity, now that the doors to the new building are open and the fall semester is in full swing. Seeing all of the students in the halls and community members in the clinics brings a smile to my face each day.

Take a look at some of our students working away in our brand new labs and clinics:

Now that the fall semester is coming to a close, I’d like to shift my focus to our programs and the winter semester. new science lab

Last week, some of the large lab equipment made its way over to the Centre for Health and Wellness. The beds and some of the equipment for the Nursing Resource Centre has been moved, as well as the paramedic lab equipment. New to the program this year, paramedic students have access to a car that has undergone destruction, so that students can simulate emergency care on the scene of a car accident.

The science labs on the third floor are in the final stage of completion and the focus for the next month will be to complete the labs and community health clinics on the first and second floors.

The health and wellness staff are waiting patiently for the green light to move into the new building, and when they do, you will be the first to hear about it here on this blog!

We are all very excited for what’s to come and we can’t wait until the students take their first steps into the building this September.

Have a safe and happy summer everyone!

Sincerely,

Cass

All packed and ready to go!

With files packed away and boxes stacked high, staff are very anxious to get into the new building. The moves will begin in the next few weeks. It will take time to set-up all of the program-specific equipment, especially the high tech simulators for the nursing and paramedic labs. We just want to make sure that everything is ready for the students this fall!

Nonetheless, the new space will be a refreshing change for everyone, and it will be wonderful to amalgamate our programs with teaching clinics under one roof. The Veterinary Technician program will remain in our outstanding facility at the Orillia Campus, and we will continue to serve our Grey/Bruce area with health and wellness programs on the Owen Sound Campus.

The third floor of the new centre in Barrie is almost complete… it is soon be the new home for our staff and faculty, along with the Opticianry and the science labs. Lab equipment has been ordered, and these will be the first classrooms completed for the students. Individuals are on-hand with their hard hats and steel-toed boots to get these labs set-up. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed that I will have a July moving day update soon!

Thanks,

 Cass
