Program description
The Dental Assisting program will prepare a student to assume a position as a dental assistant, capable of working interdependently and collaboratively with health professionals in a variety of practice settings.
Why choose Georgian?
Our Dental Assisting program is fully accredited with the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada- Canadian Dental Association. We have an on-site restorative clinic, through which our students practice the technical and communication skill necessary with clients from the community.
Georgian’s Dental Assisting program provides students with the knowledge and practice required to meet entry to practice requirements for certification with the Ontario Dental Assistants Association (ODAA) and eligible to write the National Dental Assistant Examination (NDAEB).
Graduates of our Dental Assisting program are fully prepared to meet the technical, professional, and ethical responsibilities of an entry-level Level 11 Dental Assistant in Ontario.
Placement opportunities
- Restorative dental clinic on campus
- Collaborative care clinics with dental hygiene students
- One week placement with faculty of the University of Toronto in dental specialty areas
- Four week placement in a general dental practice
Lab/professional experience
Students will receive lab experience covering the following areas:
- Exposing and processing traditional and digital radiographs and intra-oral imaging
- Dental materials used in general and specialty dentistry
- Preventative care procedures
- Custom-made mouthguards and tooth whitening trays
- Assisting a dentist for restorative dentistry and specialty procedures
Employment
The dental assistant will work independently, interdependently, and collaboratively with other health professionals in a variety of practice environments, including clinical practice, community and public health organizations.
These can include but are not limited to:
- General dentistry practices
- Specialty practice dental offices
- Dental hygiene dental practices
- Public health organizations
- Dental office administration and sales
- Registered denturists
Entry-level salary range: $15.00-$18.00 per hour
