Information on English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Georgian College offers a complete EAP program designed exclusively for the international student whose first language is not English.  EAP Application Form

English for Academic Purposes at Georgian College

English for Academic Purposes (EAP- Levels 1, 2, 3) Certificate – Each level is 14 weeks (or one semester) in length, with a total of 336 hours. Students must achieve a 60% average to take the next level.

A typical week of 24 hours includes:

  • Speaking Skills (4 hours)
  • Grammar Skills (4 hours)
  • Language Lab/Listening Skills (4 hours)
  • Writing Skills (4 hours)
  • Reading Skills (4 hours)
  • Vocabulary Skills (4 hours)

English for Academic Purposes (EAP- Level 4) Certificate – This level is 14 weeks, or one semester in length, with a total of 336 hours. Students must achieve a 60% average to enter directly into Post-Secondary programs. In EAP 4, students can take one optional General Education course or an IELTS Exam Preparation course.

A typical week of 24 hours includes:

  • Speaking Skills (3 hours)
  • Grammar Skills (3 hours)
  • Exploring Post–Secondary Options (3 hours)
  • Writing Skills (3 hours)
  • Reading Skills (3 hours)
  • Vocabulary Skills (3 hours)
  • IELTS Exam Preparation Course or Academic credit (3 hours)
  • Listening and Note-taking Skills (3 hours)

 Other Opportunities for English Practice

Georgian offers the following services free of charge to EAP students:

  • Chat Club (2 hours per week) – practice your conversation skills with Canadian students
  • Write – On Centre (open 20 + hours per week) – get tutoring help for your written assignments
  • Weekday Field Trips – learn about Canada and practice your conversation skills

Georgian College will provide free homestay coordination. International students have several accommodation options.

Health Insurance

All students must have health insurance during their stay in Canada. The cost of health insurance (basic coverage for sickness, accidents and emergencies) is included in the tuition fees and each student will be covered automatically.

Visa

For information about study permits and visitor visas for international EAP students please contact the Canadian Embassy. A study permit is required for studies longer than 6 months ( www.cic.gc.ca )
