Glossary of Video Production Terms
Video production is easy! There are three stages to video production: Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production.
Pre-Production
- This is what happens before the camera rolls. The script is written, story board is prepared, performers are cast and location is decided. This is also a good time to get familiar with the camera
- Be well prepared for production and editing by reviewing footage, selecting music or sound effects and by scripting your voice over.
Production
- This is where you shoot the video footage. Record extra material as required i.e. ambient noise, scenics, cutaway shots, etc.
Post-Production
- This is everything that happens after the camera stops rolling. Included in this stage is the sound track, music, voice over, sound effects, editing, etc.
Editing
- Editing involves copying the footage from the tape to a computer hard drive (using iMovie or Final Cut Express software), cropping clips, applying effects and assembling the clips. Finally sound effects, music, and voice-overs are added.
