Georgian College reinforces its commitment to health and wellness

Georgian College has tightened smoking restrictions at all seven of its campuses. As of June 1, smoking will no longer be permitted at any entrances to College buildings and will be restricted to a limited number of designated areas.

Cheryl Simpson, Chair of Georgian’s Smoke-Free Task Team, says the College’s commitment to health and wellness is the driving force behind the policy change.

“The new restrictions are in line with the College’s ongoing efforts to ensure staff have a safe and healthy place to work and that students have a safe and healthy environment for learning,” said Simpson. She also noted that the College had assistance from the Simcoe-Muskoka District Health Unit in making changes to the smoking policy.

Simpson added that it’s no coincidence that the timing of the smoking regulations follows World No Tobacco Day on May 31.

“We wanted to reinforce the message that we are simply part of a much bigger global initiative to increase awareness of the health risks posed by second-hand smoke and to promote a healthier environment for all.”

Information about the location of newly designated smoking areas at Georgian’s campuses can be found at http://www.georgianc.on.ca/news/smoking.
