Although Dale Lovering retired from Georgian’s Aboriginal Studies and Liberal Arts portfolio in 2005, he continues to have a lasting effect on his former students and colleagues.

Dale was honoured with the Professor Emeritus designation at the June 17 Barrie Campus convocation ceremony. The honorary designation may be granted to retired faculty members who have demonstrated exemplary service to the College and its communities – as recognized by the President and Board of Governors. Granting this honour builds upon Georgian’s reputation for delivering quality learning experiences to students by recognizing the academic leadership and outstanding contributions of retired faculty members.

Dale is described by his colleagues as an outstanding professor who is fully dedicated to teaching and challenging students to reach their full potential. He is also known for his exuberance and love of teaching. In fact, Dale’s lectures and presentations were more than formal presentations; students often raved about how lessons came alive in his classroom. Feedback over the years consistently cites Dale’s caring nature and ability to identify with and reach his students as key factors in their own success.

Dale’s impact on the College extends beyond the classroom. Over the years, Dale has contributed significantly to curriculum development, assuming leadership roles at both the course and program levels. When online learning came into its own, Dale quickly adapted the methodology to his syllabus. In addition to teaching, Dale was instrumental in developing a plan for a student writing centre and also helped establish the College’s Centre for Access.

Dale strived to better himself through ongoing education. He used his vacation time to complete a PhD and applied his newfound knowledge and techniques in the classroom. These changes further helped foster student involvement and encouraged learning with new media.

After leaving an indelible impact on curriculum development and a long line of successful graduates, it is clear Dale has met and surpassed all of the qualities necessary for the designation of Professor Emeritus.

The College community congratulates Dale on his many accomplishments and thanks him for sharing his immeasurable energy, integrity and intelligence with students and his fellow faculty members.
