Free pre-apprenticeship program at Midland Campus starting in March

Submitted by on Wednesday, 27 January 2010No Comment

Georgian’s Robbert Hartog Midland Campus has received funding from the Ontario government to offer a pre-apprenticeship plumbing program.

The free 31-week program, which combines theory with hands-on training, starts at the end of March.

Pre-Apprenticeship Plumbing supports the Ontario government’s focus on addressing shortages in the skilled trades by increasing the number of new entrants to apprenticeship programs.

The program will support applicants who require job skills and trade readiness experience, which will help bridge the gap between the skills people have with the skills employers are seeking.

The program includes Academic Upgrading, which will help applicants attain the academic skills required for successful completion of the Level 1 in-school Plumber program.

Academic Upgrading covers apprenticeship math, physics, communications and computers.

Safety training will include:

  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS)
  • Fall prevention
  • Ladders and scaffolds
  • Elevated platforms
  • First Aid/CPR
  • And more

Job search skills will focus on resumé writing and interview skills.

The Level 1 in-school Plumber program includes instruction on plumbing systems, safety, rigging and hoisting, trade calculations and piping methods.

Students at the Midland Campus have access to a state-of-the-art learning centre, instruction, textbooks and tools, safety boots, certificates/tickets and a variety of educational services.

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older, Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, hold a valid driver’s licence and not currently be registered as an apprentice. The selection process is competitive and a limited number of seats are available.

Each applicant will be required to complete an application form, submit a resumé, undergo a complete assessment of skills testing and participate in a panel interview.
