Canada Day spirit shines at Muskoka Campus

National pride was alive and well at the Muskoka Campus over the long weekend, as staff celebrated our nation’s 144th birthday . James Fielding took a break from his role as a support staff member to act as Captain Canada for the day. Staff and students also enjoyed a 12-inch sub and ice-cream sandwiches.

Students from the Muskoka Campus of Georgian College celebrated the end of the year with a friends-and-family barbecue and enjoyed a variety of musical performances from some of their peers.

Singing and guitar-playing were only a part of the performances; instructor Robin Clipsham had the crowd rolling with laughter as she judged the contestants on their talent in her own version of Canadian Idol. This was a truly great ending for the graduating class.

Muskoka Campus staff and students take part in local Santa Claus parade

Staff members and students from Georgian’s Muskoka Campus participated in the Bracebridge Santa Claus parade on Sunday, Dec. 6. They brought Santa’s workshop to the downtown core. They put fake snow around the tree, even though the region had snow accumulation throughout the day.

Muskoka Campus students raise money for Bracebridge Public Library

A group of Office Administration students at Georgian’s Muskoka Campus recently donated $1,925 to the Bracebridge Public Library and the Town of Bracebridge.

Funds were raised through charity barbecues and a booth the students set up for a special event in Bracebridge July 31. The money will go toward the children’s section of the library.

This isn’t the first time the campus has gathered together to support the library. A separate intake of Office Administration students last year raised $1,690 to help repair damage at the library after a leaky roof damaged books and carpeting in late 2008.

Georgian’s Muskoka Campus hosts spring graduation barbecue

Staff and faculty members at Georgian’s Muskoka Campus celebrated its spring graduation with a barbecue for students and their friends and family Aug. 5.

The day featured a draw for a variety of merchandise including flower arrangements and two tickets to a Savour Muskoka event.

The students graduated from such full-time programs as Office Administration, Personal Support Worker and Academic and Career Entrance.

Georgian’s Muskoka Campus raises money for heart and stroke research

Students, staff and faculty members at Georgian’s Muskoka Campus in Bracebridge took part in the Heart and Stroke Foundation‘s Big Bike challenge July 14.

The Big Bike is a 30-seat bicycle that volunteers ride to raise funds for heart and stroke research. Last year more than 50,000 riders across the country raised over $7 million.

Lakeland Power offers scholarships for students at Georgian’s Muskoka Campus

Lakeland Power will help local students attending Georgian’s Muskoka Campus by providing two $1,000 scholarships. Lakeland Power distributes electricity to consumers in Bracebridge, Burk’s Falls, Huntsville, Magnetawan and Sundridge.

The awards, to be dispersed in the fall, are open to students at any level of study and in any program who are studying at the Muskoka Campus.

The first scholarship, the Bracebridge Generation Award, is named after Lakeland subsidiary Bracebridge Generation; the second is called the Lakeland Power Award.

In addition to Lakeland’s awards, full-time Georgian students at the Muskoka Campus are also eligible for about 75 individual awards in various categories. These are available to all full-time Georgian students at any of its seven campuses.

Awards and scholarships at Georgian are given out based on financial need, academic excellence and/or proven leadership skills and volunteer work in the community.

Georgian’s Muskoka Campus hosts Women in Skilled Trades program

Georgian’s Muskoka Campus has received funding from the Ontario government to offer the Women in Skilled Trades (WIST) pre-apprenticeship general carpentry program this fall. The program, designed for women interested in pursuing careers in carpentry, will start in September and run through March 2010.

Muskoka Campus raises funds for Bracebridge Public Library

Students in the second semester of the Office Administration program at Georgian’s Muskoka Campus recently presented the Bracebridge Public Library with a generous donation toward the cost of repairing water damage to the Muskoka Collection area of the library. The library, a vital community partner, also hosts the campus’ collection.

Students undertook a series of fundraisers on campus through the winter semester, including bake sales, barbecue lunches, “chili days”, penny sales, and sales of flower bulbs. They also contacted local radio station, Moose FM, which promoted their efforts on the air.

The students surpassed their initial goal of raising $500, more than tripling that amount to $1,690.

Bracebridge Mayor Don Coates, along with Bracebridge Public Library CEO Cathryn Rodney, expressed their sincere appreciation for the generous gift and commended the students for showing initiative.
