Georgian College will receive an investment of $4 million for a new Collingwood Campus through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

The Hon. Helena Guergis, MP for Simcoe-Grey MP, made the announcement on April 8. Georgian will announce additional details of the plans for a new campus in coming week.

“I have worked long and hard to achieve this $4 million funding announcement for a new Collingwood Georgian College Campus, a campus that will bring immense benefits to my constituents,” said Guergis. “I thank Brian Tamblyn, President and CEO of Georgian College for the incredible learning experiences Georgian College provides and will continue to provide.”

“We are very appreciative of this financial contribution from the federal government. I would especially like to thank Helena Guergis, Christopher J. Carrier, Mayor, Town of Collingwood, Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, and MPs throughout the Georgian Bay region for being such strong supporters of Georgian College. All of their work has been critical in ensuring that our new Collingwood Campus becomes a reality,” said Brian Tamblyn, President and CEO of Georgian College.

“This investment in a new, permanent home for Georgian College serving Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Clearview Township, Meaford and Town of the Blue Mountains, will go far in helping to address short and long-term economic needs of the entire area. A new consolidated campus will allow Georgian to continue to expand its enrolment by as much as 20 per cent annually. We look forward to announcing the location of Georgian College’s new Collingwood Campus later this month.”

Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier expressed similar thoughts.

“This funding announcement is the most exciting announcement of this Council’s term. Collingwood Council endorsed the establishment of a permanent post-secondary institution as a critical priority for our term. This funding of $4 million along with the strength of partnerships with President Brian Tamblyn of Georgian College, John DiPoce of DiPoce Management, the Hon. Helena Guergis and the Town of Collingwood will mean a permanent site will be underway very soon,” Carrier said.

“As Mayor of Collingwood I would like to thank our MP Helena Guergis and her staff for their assistance in obtaining this grant for Georgian College through the Community Adjustment Fund. Today and Tomorrow’s workforce will be able to receive the ongoing skills closer to home and closer to work thanks to the efforts of all involved. Thank you!”

This project will be funded through the Community Adjustment Fund, a two-year, $1-billion national program aimed at addressing the short-term economic needs of communities hit hardest by the global economic recession. The approved project must meet the terms and conditions set out in the contribution agreement.

FedDev Ontario was created as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan to support economic and community development, innovation, and economic diversification, with contributions to communities, businesses and non-profit organizations in southern Ontario.

It sounds like every woman’s dream come true – a unique design for ladies’ pants that make women look noticeably thinner, trimmer and smoother around the middle. And now you can learn to create your own patterns in a unique course at Georgian College’s Barrie Campus.

Georgian instructor Maria Calautti used a unique method to design “Cynch It” pants, which make women look noticeably smoother around the middle. She teaches the method in Georgian College’s European Patternmaking course.

Maria Calautti developed “Cynch It” pants using the European Patternmaking method. She says the pants are adjustable and very flattering to the figure, no matter what size or age of the woman wearing them. Calautti teaches European Patternmaking, a Continuing Education course at Georgian. The course incorporates a method of drafting custom patterns used in Italy for decades and offers participants everything they need to know to create garments – without mathematical calculations.

“The European patternmaking method is very simple,” says Calautti. “It’s rewarding to create and wear clothes designed for your own body and that fit your unique tastes and lifestyle.” Not to mention making you look 15 to 20 pounds lighter!

The pants will be manufactured and distributed by Toronto-based Beker Fashions, with a local retailer still to be announced.

This one-year Ontario College Certificate in Bookkeeping qualifies for Second Career Strategy, an Ontario government program which helps laid off workers make the transition to new careers in growing areas of the economy and provides funding for tuition and books for eligible candidates.

Bookkeeping is a highly sought-after skill, says Lynn Hynd, Manager, Collingwood Campus.

Job prospects after graduation are considered high. More than 90 per cent of Georgian College graduates find employment within six months of graduating, and 94 per cent of employers are satisfied or highly satisfied with these new employees.

The Bookkeeping program is being offered in response to demand for skilled employees in the Collingwood and central Ontario region, says Sebrina Westbrooke, program supervisor at the Collingwood Campus.

“We meet regularly with community partners, employment counsellors, and local employers to find out where workers are most needed, and our sources tell us that Bookkeeping is in high demand,” Westbrooke says.

“The program is designed to help students gain the skills they need to be workplace ready.”

Courses may include, but are not limited to, financial accounting principles, computerized accounting, cost accounting, payroll compliance and fundamentals, microcomputer applications, taxation and mathematics of finance.

Other programs offered at the Collingwood Campus include:

Gas Technician

Personal Support Worker

Office Administration

Applicants to these programs may qualify for Second Career Strategy funding.
