The Georgian College University Partnership Centre Speaker Series presents columnist and author Gwynne Dyer in the Georgian College Theatre, Barrie Campus on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.

Dyer will address issues inherited by U.S. President Barack Obama last January, including what should be done about Iran and what may happen to the Arab world after American troops pull out of Iraq.

Dyer has worked as a freelance journalist, columnist, broadcaster and lecturer on international affairs for more than 20 years, but was originally trained as a historian.

His projects include a book and television documentary on the strategic confrontation in Asia and a radio series on the long-range political and demographic implications of extreme climate change.

His first television series, the seven-part documentary War, aired in 45 countries in the mid-80s. One episode from the series, The Profession of Arms, was nominated for an Academy Award. His more recent works include the Gemini award-winning series The Human Race and Protection Force, a three-part series on Bosnian peacekeepers.

His award-winning radio documentaries include The Gorbachev Revolution, a seven-part series based on Dyer’s experiences in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union from 1987 to 1990, and Millennium, a six-hour series on the emerging global culture.

Dyer’s recent books include Ignorant Armies: Sliding into War in Iraq, Future: Tense and The Mess They Made: The Middle East after Iraq, all of which appeared on the Globe and Mail’s non-fiction best-seller list. His newest book Climate Wars, based on his recent CBC Ideas series, deals with the geopolitical implications of large-scale climate change and has just been published in Canada by Random House.
