Annual Georgian College Golf Classic raises more than $700,000 to date for awards and scholarships

Well over 300 participants enjoyed a fun-filled day at The Club at Bond Head for the 22nd Annual Georgian College Golf Classic on May 11. The money is still being counted, but this year’s proceeds are expected to push the total amount raised to date for student awards and scholarships to more than $700,000.

Funds are raised through individual and team registrations, sponsorships and silent and live auctions, with items donated by Georgian’s industry partners and generous staff and faculty members.

Amanda Lee-Edwards, a fourth-year Laurentian @ Georgian student, spoke to participants about the importance of the awards and scholarships program.

“Because of your support, many students have the ability to pursue post-secondary education. Many students face financial challenges and must balance a heavy courseload while working part-time jobs to pay the bills, sometimes several part-time jobs. For many, this is a challenge, especially in today’s economy,” she said.

“Money raised at events like today’s creates opportunities for students to pursue certificates, diplomas, degrees, and even advanced degree studies. It also enriches the experience of being a student and allows them to get involved in the school, give back to the community, to better themselves and to realize their potential.”

Town of Bracebridge Mayor Don Coates attended the Classic with former mayor Scott Northmore, former deputy mayor Al Taylor, and Graydon Smith, Bracebridge and District of Muskoka councillor. It was their second year attending the tournament.

“It’s so difficult to quantify what having Georgian in our community means. We’ve enjoyed working with the College on bringing its new Muskoka Campus in Bracebridge to life and have been energized by the expanded programs for students as well as for those requiring new employment skills. Attending the annual Georgian College Golf Classic is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for being a very important part of our community,” said Coates.
