Future chefs from Ontario high schools were slicing, dicing, drizzling, grilling and sautéing in an effort to win cash for tuition, certificates and medals in Georgian College’s High School Culinary Competition at the Barrie Campus May 4.
This was the seventh annual event hosted by the College’s Hospitality and Tourism department.
The competition introduces secondary students to a competitive cooking environment and gives them a glimpse into the many exciting career paths the industry has to offer.
This year, Orillia’s Twin Lakes Secondary School took first place in the cooking category, the Brother André Catholic High School team from Markham came first in baking, and Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute scored top marks in the restaurant service category.
Dave Jones, co-ordinator of Georgian’s Culinary programs and one of the competition judges, says the event is always an eye-opener for him.
“I’m always astonished at the level of skill these high school students bring to the competition,” he said.
Students had just over three hours to demonstrate their culinary know-how. Entries were judged on cooking methods, nutritional balance, menu writing principles and maximum utilization of the ingredients list. Judges included a select group of professional chefs from the College and industry.
The winners received medals and cash prizes toward tuition scholarships for Georgian’s Hospitality and Tourism programs.
Sponsors included members of the food service industry, local businesses and organization partners, who provided donations to fund the scholarships. All students received a certificate of participation.
