Basket bidding, buffing, barbecuing, baking – the Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound campuses have been busy getting a head start on Shinerama. The spirit will continue into September for the annual campaign, which raises funds and support for cystic fibrosis research and treatment. On Sept. 15 students from all three campuses will be out in the community shining shoes and cars at various locations.
Staff at the Barrie Campus enjoyed mid-afternoon snacks in support of the campaign. Students have been showcasing their baking skills and going office to office to sell their yummy treats. Brownies, cookies, banana bread…they’ve had something to match every craving!
Staff also created gift baskets for an auction held Aug. 8 to 12 as part of a friendly campus-wide competition to raise funds. The event was a huge success – the SAC office raised $1,375. Many thanks go to the following departments for generously donating a gift basket:
- Bookstore
- University Partnership Centre
- Registrar’s Office
- The Last Class
- Athletics
- Office of Development & Alumni Relations
- Student Services – Centre for Access
- Centre for Co-op, Internship and Career Services
- Human Resources – Payroll
- Student Administrative Council
The basket created by The Last Class raised the most funds with an outstanding $350 bid! TLC staff will receive a pizza party courtesy of SAC and Papa John’s Pizza.
Staff at the Barrie Campus is encouraged to bring their car out to the Alumni Courtyard on Sept. 15 for the final Shinerama car wash of the season!
The Orillia Campus has an ambitious goal of raising $5,000 this year and they are more than $1,600 closer to reaching it. They recently held a mini car wash and barbecue, and have generously received community support from a number of local businesses:
- BDO Canada LLP
- Bowers and Jones Surveying Ltd.
- Brewery Bay Food Company
- Davenport Subaru Orillia
- Ellis Hearing Aid Service
- Grant Thornton LLP
- Hacker Gignac Rice LLP
- Home Hardware Orillia
- Richards Goldsmithing
- Tammy’s Restaurant
- Theo’s Eatery and Tops Pizza
Erika Ingram, student and director of the Orillia campaign, says participating in the annual event is a great way to show Georgian pride while making a difference.
“It’s important to us because it helps to foster spirit during the first month of school, and it provides our students with a way to meet each other and to get to know their new community,” she notes. “Plus, there’s nothing better than knowing that you changed someone’s life by participating in the event.”
The Owen Sound Campus kicked off their campaign with a barbecue on July 6. More than 70 staff and students came out for the event.
What is Shinerama? It’s Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser, involving students from more than 65 colleges and universities. To date, the campaign has raised close to $19.6 million.
