Submitted by on Wednesday, 18 November 2009No Comment

Imagine a world where thousands of films are made about workers and the conditions under which they live, work, fight and succeed in their daily lives.

This year marks the birth of a Canada-wide film festival dedicated to workers and their communities.

The Canadian Labour International Film Festival (CLiFF), which runs Nov. 22 to 28 in Toronto and Nov. 28 and 29 in the rest of Canada, is the first-ever labour-oriented film festival in Canada.

The Orillia portion of the film festival is being organized by the Orillia Muskoka and District Labour Council. Screenings will take place at Georgian’s Orillia Campus Nov. 28, 1 to 4 p.m. in the theatre (room C112). Admission is free. Film screenings may change without notice. At press time, films include:

  • You, Me and the SPP: this documentary film covers the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) and Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility agreements and their effect on the people of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. It also looks at how the agreements are affecting the democratic processes of these countries.
  • Poor No More: A couple of Canadians go on a road trip to Ireland and Sweden against the backdrop of a global economic crisis to see how workers in other countries are faring. They’re joined by comedienne Mary Walsh, who is their guide.
