Peer Services seeking nominations for Tutor of the Year
Georgian’s Peer Services department will recognize outstanding student tutors when they present the second annual Tutor of the Year award April 2.
Peer Services hires more than 120 tutors each year at the Barrie Campus alone.
“Without our tutors, many students might not succeed academically,” says Beth Salt, Peer Services Advisor. “The dedication, professionalism and guidance provided by our student tutors is vital to the success of many of their peers and they should be recognized accordingly.”
There will be three tutor awards: one each for the Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound campuses.
The award will be presented to a student tutor or a learning skills assistant who has demonstrated excellence in facilitating the learning of his or her fellow students.
Nominees must have at least 25 hours experience as a tutor and have completed foundational tutor training to be considered for the award.
Recipients will receive a $250 award and a feature in the College’s student newspaper, the Georgian Eye.
Students receiving one-on-one tutoring, or who regularly visit the Math Lab, Write On! or Knowledge Hub at the Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound campuses, are encouraged to nominate an individual they feel is most deserving of the award.
Last year’s recipients were Steve Newbold (Barrie Campus), Christina Childs (Orillia Campus) and Amber Wills (Owen Sound Campus).
Those who wish to nominate a student tutor are asked to contact Peer Services at peerservices@georgianc.on.ca no later than Thursday, March 25.
