‘Gate running’ – following people out at the parking gates without paying – is considered a very serious offence by the college. In an effort to eliminate this activity, Georgian is stepping up enforcement on its parking rules and regulations.

Quick facts:

  • When a person uses our parking facilities without paying, they increase the burden on those who do pay.
  • Gate runners are perpetrating a theft against the college.
  • If drivers of the vehicle the gate runner follows through the gate is in on the scam, they will be ticketed as well.
  • The fine for gate running is $100 per occurrence.
  • Tickets are issued via Canada Post.

Several weeks ago Security stepped up enforcement on the rules surrounding gate runners and there has been a significant increase in those receiving tickets. Security will continue to review gate activities each day to determine what has transpired and issue tickets as necessary.

If tickets are not paid within the allotted time period, here is what can result:

  • If the gate runner is a student, a hold may be placed on their account which may prevent access to transcripts and grades and may prevent registration in subsequent terms. (This procedure is no different than for any other debt owed to the college.)
  • Parking cards cannot be renewed or purchased until outstanding tickets are paid in full.
  • If a ticket is not paid on time it will be forwarded to the college’s collection agency of record.
  • Depending on the driver’s ticket history, the vehicle may either be suspended from entering college grounds or towed.

If you see this type of activity taking place at the gates please take note of the following:

  • Plate number
  • Make and model of the vehicle
  • Colour
  • Time
  • Gate number

Contact Security at 705-722-5100 or e-mail parking@georgiancollege.ca. Security will use this information to locate the owner or driver of the vehicle and issue a ticket.

We trust that by increasing enforcement we will be successful in significantly curtailing this activity.  We hope you can help.  Let’s have everyone pay their fair share!
