Physical Resources offers student helpful and practical tips about winter parking and walking on campus.

Safe winter parking

  • Do not park in unauthorized parking areas(e.g. roadways, sidewalks, fire routes, handicapped spaces). Avoid getting ticketed and/or towed at your expense.
  • Pay attentionto and abide by signs advising of Parking Restrictions.
  • Do not double or triple park– you will be towed at your expense.
  • Do not block driving laneswithin parking lots. Leave lanes open for other drivers to navigate their way around the lot.
  • In the event that snow may cover up parking lines, continue to park closely to the next carso as not to take up more space than necessary.
  • Do not expect to find parking next to the building you plan to enter.  Be prepared to walk from the furthest lot (dress accordingly and wear the appropriate footwear).
  • At the Barrie Campus, always try Lots 6 and/or 9. Parking is almost always available there.
  • Remember that you park at your own risk. If you bury your vehicle, get stuck, the battery dies, you need a tow, etc., you will have to call a towing company to assist you at your own expense.
  • Drive with cautionas you navigate through the campus. Snowbanks reduce visibility, and snow/ice-covered roads can make stopping tricky at best.  Watch for snowplows, pedestrians and other vehicles at all times.
  • Do not attempt to overtake or drive around heavy snow equipment in use. Be patient, and drive slowly.
  •  It’s imperative that all parking lots be left vacant overnight. This allows snow removal crews to do an efficient job of snowplowing.
  • Please note that all cars left on college property overnight without prior approval will be ticketed and/or towed. If you have to leave your car overnight, please contact Security at ext. 5100 or 722-5100. They will advise whether you may leave your vehicle on campus and, if so, where.  You will need to provide your make, model, licence and phone number.
  • Please remember that Parking Lots 8/9 are to be used for daytime parking only.  Vehicles parked in these lots after dark will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. Should you park in these lots throughout the day and need to attend the college in the evening, you are required to return to your vehicle during daylight hours to move it to another parking lot.

Safe winter walking

No matter how carefully snow and ice are removed from college roadways and sidewalks, staff and students will likely encounter slippery surfaces when walking outdoors during the winter. It’s important to always be aware of the slip, trip and fall dangers and to walk safely on icy and slippery surfaces.

  • Wear shoes or boots that provide tractionon snow and ice such as rubber and neoprene composite. Avoid plastic and leather soles.
  • Use special care when entering and exiting vehicles. Use your vehicle for support.
  • Walk on designated walkways as much as possible. Taking shortcuts over snow piles and areas where snow and ice removal is not feasible can be hazardous.
  • Look ahead when you walk.A sidewalk that is completely covered with ice may require travelling along a grassy edge for traction.
  • Listen for snow clearing equipment (blue lights, back-up beepers).
