Autism Spectrum Disorder
DEVS2014 - CRN 20153 - Credit Course:
A comprehensive examination of the Autism Spectrum Disorder, this course will provide educational staff with the tools they need to work successfully with children diagnosed with this complex condition. Pulling content information from a team of professionals including school boards, Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation, and international autism authorities Dr. Peter Szatmari and Dr. Lonnie Zwaigenbaum. A strong emphasis will be placed on communication, social skills, behavioural challenges, family, sensory and educational issues.

This course is designed in accordance with DSW Provincial Standards to provide the student with a working knowledge of the structure and function of the human body. This will assist the student in the assessment of physical needs and administration of health care for persons with development disabilities. The emphasis of this course is on major drug classifications and their effects on specific body systems.

DEVS 2007 - CRN - Credit Course:
Dual diagnosis refers to a condition wherein an individual with a developmental disability is also diagnosed with a mental health problem such as mood disorder, schizophrenia, dissociative, anxiety, and/or personality disorder. This course educates students about the nature of dual diagnosis, and need for coordinated systems of support.

Facilitative Techniques
DEVS 2001 - CRN 20414 - Credit Course
This course provides students with an understanding of the principles and application of facilitative techniques designed to assist persons with developmental disabilities acquire new skills. Through a variety of procedures, including precision teaching, students will be able to utilize strategies to assist, coach or teach skills to optimize independence and encourage self-advocacy. The strategies utilized are consistent with respecting and valuing people.

DEVS2002 - CRN - Credit Course:
This course provides an overview of the normal aging processes including the physical, cognitive, sensory, communication and psychological needs of older adults. Common pathological problems along with specialized needs in aging are highlighted. Emphasis is placed on developmental disabilities and Alzheimer’s Disease. Knowledge of community resources and understanding the role of the service provider in promoting heath and well being among older adults is discussed.

This course examines professional process and practice in the context of the human service organization. Included are culture of the workplace, leadership styles, principles and applications of interviewing, teamwork and team-building, ethical issues, conflict management. DEVS 2003 - CRN - Credit Course:
This course introduces students to a problem model of helping. Emphasis is strongly placed on the values that form the foundation of supportive counselling: respect, genuineness, empathy and empowerment. Along the way, students learn about the significance and impact of relationships, processes of problem-management, finding solutions, value-based challenging, goal setting and implementation. In addition, they practice and are evaluated in empathic listening.
