Georgian named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers — for second year in a row

Posted: 21 Apr 2011

Georgian College is now officially greener than ever.

On Earth Day, April 22, Georgian was named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2011 – the second consecutive year that the college has won the award.

Canada’s Greenest Employers are selected each year by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, a division of Toronto-based Mediacorp Canada Inc.

Now in its fifth year, the national award recognizes employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture.

“Winning this award two years in a row confirms Georgian’s status as a leader in sustainable development,” said Georgian President and CEO Brian Tamblyn.

“This recognizes our efforts to engage students and staff  to create a culture that highlights the importance of responsible actions for the sake of the environment.”

Georgian is being recognized for its strategy of advancing and promoting three environmental priorities: waste reduction and diversion, enhanced environmental literacy and increased scrutiny of sustainability issues when purchasing goods and services. Georgian’s staff and students continue working and learning together to achieve these objectives.

New initiatives implemented in the past year include

  • e-waste recycling depots at all campuses
  • expansion of the “hydration station” project, which provides free chilled and filtered water for staff and students with refillable water bottles.
  • Major progress continues on the recycling front. The amount of material that leaves Georgian campuses for recycling has increased to 55 per cent, up from 22 per cent in 2008. Previously, this material was heading directly for landfill sites.

“I am proud that Georgian College and our employees continue to be recognized for our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and having environmentally responsible business activities,” said Dianne Corrigan, Georgian College’s environmental sustainability co-ordinator.

“Georgian has taken a leadership role in demonstrating how a large organization can find practical ways to incorporate environmentally friendly practices in its operations. It is a series of small steps that collectively make a significant difference, but there is still a lot of work to be done on this journey.”

Construction begins on new home for Georgian College Collingwood Campus

Posted: 7 Jun 2010

Educational opportunities for local students will be enhanced and expanded, after ground was broken May 29 on the first permanent home for a Collingwood Campus of Georgian College.

The new 20,000-square-foot campus at the corner of Poplar Sideroad and Raglan Street is intended to strongly support the future economic growth of Collingwood and region.

This investment will specifically address regional labour market gaps by providing employers with a skilled workforce.

“This is a seminal day for Georgian College. After 26 years, we have finally found our permanent home in Collingwood,” said Georgian President and CEO Brian Tamblyn. “This campus will expand access to full and part-time academic studies, opening up new opportunities and new horizons to local students.”

The new Collingwood Campus is located on 10 acres of land generously donated by developer John Di Poce. It is also made possible by a $4-million contribution from the Community Adjustment Fund of the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

Since first offering part-time courses in Collingwood 26 years ago, Georgian has moved through 10 different leased locations as demand for post-secondary education has grown.

The new campus will be a custom-made home, allowing the College to offer a wide range of educational opportunities for area residents and businesses.

NEW CAMPUS OPENS FALL 2011

When the doors open for classes in the fall of 2011, Georgian will be able to provide greater access to full-time and part-time studies and expand corporate training, skills simulation, and small business services.

The new campus will contain nine classrooms plus a student lounge.

Among the classrooms will be two computer labs, one “e-lab”, one multi-function health sciences lab, and one community room/small classroom.

The balance will be traditional classrooms, all equipped with full multimedia services. These are also multi-function rooms, fitted with movable walls for maximum flexibility in terms of space.

Administrative offices and “innovation space” for small business incubation activities are also included.

The new building will accommodate 250 full-time students and more than 3,000 part-time students annually.

County of Simcoe injects significant contribution into Georgian College’s Centre for Health and Wellness

Posted: 18 Mar 2010

The County of Simcoe demonstrated its commitment to the future of local health care education by presenting an $800,000 donation to Georgian College staff and students at the Barrie Campus on March 18. The contribution will help build the Centre for Health and Wellness, which will open in September 2011.

“The County of Simcoe is committed to smart growth, and Georgian College’s 165,000-square-foot expansion is the perfect example of this,” said Warden Cal Patterson. “Not only will the new health and wellness centre help educate students, it will also help provide the region with a much needed resource.”

As a skills shortage looms in the health care sector, Georgian’s strategy is to offset the challenge locally by expanding its School of Health and Wellness as well as the number of graduates produced from such programs as nursing. The 165,000-square-foot building expansion on the Barrie Campus will enable Georgian to make way for many more enrolment spaces.

The new centre will allow Georgian to double its current 1,500 health program students to 3,000 when classes start in September 2011. Students will have the opportunity to pursue health and wellness related certificates, diplomas and degrees, including advanced degree programs. It will also be home to a bevy of health care services teaching clinics open to the public, as well as leading-edge laboratories, and technology-enhanced classrooms.

The facility will also ensure Georgian has the capacity to expand its University Partnership Centre to eventually offer even more degree and advanced-degree level studies.

Brian Tamblyn, President and CEO of Georgian College, said the County of Simcoe’s generous contribution is a testament to the positive impact the facility will have on Simcoe County communities, health care employers in need of a qualified workforce, and ultimately patients in need of care.

“The County of Simcoe is not only an employer of our health and wellness program graduates, it is also a dedicated stakeholder in the project, helping to ensure health care providers are available to residents when they need them. We are extremely grateful that the County of Simcoe has supported this project, and are thrilled it is standing behind Georgian’s growth,” said Tamblyn.

The County of Simcoe’s donation is the latest contribution to Georgian’s Power of Education Campaign, an initiative to raise $25 million for the expansion and improvement of key programs including health sciences, engineering technology and awards and scholarships. To date, $20.6 million has been raised.

Georgian College President and CEO Brian Tamblyn (left) recently toured the Barrie Campus with Seneca College President David Agnew. Agnew is the newest college president in the province. They had lunch in the Georgian Dining Room, operated by culinary students. Ontario’s college presidents frequently participate in teleconferences and meet quarterly. The Committee of Presidents discusses subjects such as student and industry needs, funding, future planning and professional development.

President Tamblyn has been busy attending a variety of meetings and engagements during the first few months of 2010. These have included a President’s Night, Honour Roll Reception, Georgian’s Chef and Wine series, College Council and the openings of the Career Fair and Digital Photography Show. He often meets with staff during the informal “Break with Brian” sessions, regularly held at various campuses. Tamblyn is also in attendance at many convocation ceremonies throughout the year, where he is always proud to shake the hands of Georgian’s latest graduates.

Each year, about 40,000 graduates from Ontario’s 24 colleges enter the workforce. About one-third of Ontario’s workforce – 2.1 million workers – has a college credential, the largest group in the province’s labour force.

Georgian President and CEO Brian Tamblyn (left) has received an honorary degree from Huntington University for his visionary leadership. The presentation took place at an October 2009 convocation ceremony at the Barrie Campus.

“To achieve excellence requires tremendous dedication and perseverance,” said Huntington University President Dr. Kevin McCormick.

“Huntington University is honoured to recognize Brian Tamblyn for his contributions to Huntington University and to his community. Huntington University is proud to bestow its highest honour upon Mr. Tamblyn for the exemplary leadership he has demonstrated within academia and the community.”

The Chancellor of Huntington University, Dr. Edward Conroy, added, “Convocation provides a wonderful opportunity for Huntington University to recognize outstanding citizens for their tremendous efforts, accomplishments and contributions to the communities they serve.”

Tamblyn was awarded the “Doctorate of Sacred Letter” honorary degree in recognition of his role in the development and fostering of educational partnerships between northern universities and other communities.

With more than 25 years of college management experience, Tamblyn held various vice-presidential portfolios in the areas of human resources, student services and community and business development before his appointment to Georgian.

For the past 10 years, Tamblyn has been instrumental in creating the first college-university partnership between Georgian and Huntington University in Sudbury, a model that has become a template for countless relationships on provincial, national and international levels.

In addition to providing leadership work to the College and its partnering institutions, Tamblyn also serves on a number of organizational committees for the provincial college system.

As well, he has served as a volunteer to a number of community groups, including Royal Victoria Hospital, the YMCA, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and many more. In 2003, he was awarded The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for his strong support of community development.

Tamblyn’s educational accomplishments include a Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Administrative Studies and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from York University.

In addition, he is a certified human resources professional designated by the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario.

Laurentian University is the University Partnership Centre’s largest partner. Huntington University, a federated partner and founding member of Laurentian University, has maintained a long-standing tradition of presenting students and distinguished partners with awards and honorary degrees.

Georgian celebrates groundbreaking for new health and wellness building

Posted: 28 Oct 2009

Bev HallidayGeorgian President and CEO Brian Tamblyn, Barrie MP Patrick Brown and Aileen Carroll, MPP for Barrie, along with hundreds of staff, students, corporate donors and community supporters, today celebrated the groundbreaking for Phase 1 of the College’s new Centre for Health and Wellness.

The project received federal and provincial funding totalling $40 million through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP) and Ontario’s 2009 Budget. Other investments came from the City of Barrie ($5 million), County of Simcoe ($400,000) and other donors to Georgian’s Power of Education Campaign.

The new 165,000-square-foot building will facilitate a collaborative, interprofessional, team-based approach to health sciences education and will include leading-edge laboratories and technology enhanced classrooms.

Teaching health clinics will provide student work experience while offering needed health care for students and the public. When complete, enrolment will grow by 1,800 diploma and degree students.

“The first phase of the College’s new Centre for Health and Wellness will address a number of vital healthcare priorities in our region,” said Tamblyn. “It will help us meet the continuing demand for enrolment growth in both diploma and degree Health Sciences programs at Georgian and our University Partnership Centre. These highly-qualified health care professionals are urgently needed in our growing communities.”

Teaching and learning in the classrooms, labs and clinics will support interprofessional education methods, allowing students from a variety of health sciences programs to work together on patient care.

“The new clinics will facilitate a collaborative team approach. Students from Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Dental Assisting, Opticianry, Paramedic, Pre-Health Sciences, and Massage Therapy programs will all learn and work together for the benefit of patients,” said Dr. Cassandra Thompson, Dean, School of Health and Wellness and the School of Child Studies.

First-year Paramedic student Beverly Halliday (pictured) says the new health and wellness building will allow her classmates to practice real-life scenarios and improve their ability to perform right out of school.

“Along with access to state-of-the-art equipment and high-tech classrooms, the expansion also means that we’ll have the opportunity to work as part of a team,” she said. “The new building will bring us together physically and allow us to practice basic scenarios in paramedicine in a realistic environment. This will help us become more employable when we graduate.”

The Centre will provide about 400 new full- and part-time jobs for staff and faculty, bringing a $16-million increase to Georgian’s payroll.

Economic impact of the construction alone is approximately $98 million, equivalent to the effect of a mid-sized corporation moving to Barrie.

Construction is expected to be completed by September 2011.
